Description: Jenackt has to talk to Qorri about his new status
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 2, day 16 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: N'vanik
If there was one woman Jenackt wanted to avoid indefinitely, it was the
Headwoman. Qorri hadn't said anything overt, but she was sharp and from what
he could gather, she didn't trust him. Not that he blamed her, of course,
but he had a feeling that he would have to be even more on his guard around
that woman.
Silently cursing N'vanik again, Jenackt stared at Qorri's door and knocked.
With Elleth about to clutch and the whole Weyr worried about it and
Searchriders bringing in candidates left and right, Qorri was busy. Not only
that, but she also had to help Meledei plan the Hatching though she hadn't
bothered the girl about it yet this time. Meledei had been acting strangely
of late. So right then she was actually throwing stuff around her office,
picking out the things she needed and others that could be put away. It made
an awful noise and kept the kitchen staff away from her office. When the
knock came, she looked up. "Aye?" **This better be good**
Why had N'vanik done this to him? Jenackt gave a mental groan as he opened
the door and stepped in. He shoved his hands in his pockets and shifted on
his feet. "N'vanik sent me." He spoke quickly. "Uhm...he wants me to learn
how to read." His weight shifted from foot to foot. "I'm supposed to Stand
for this clutch...and I guess I have to learn. He said to go to you."
That was not the person she was expecting to enter. And what he said
was also not what she thought he was going to say. **N'vanik....I hate
you.** Qorri was quiet for a minute as she looked at the boy, then she
straightened herself up and turned to him. "So you're a candidate
then? Because you know if you are, you're my responsibility?" She
wanted to make that clear.
His brow furrowed. "I thought I already was."
"There's a difference between being a drudge and a candidate. As a drudge
you work and then you're done. You're free after that. As a candidate, the
Weyr will put far more rules and restrictions on you. You will have a
curfew. You will live in the barracks. You will have chores _and_ classes.
You have to do well in your classes. You cannot get into trouble or you
could be disallowed to Stand by the Weyrwoman. The Weyrlingmaster will also
be the one arranging your classes." Qorri wanted him to know this was
harder. "Because if you did Impress, you would have to be ready."
He just stared at her for a moment and unknowingly echoed her thoughts
about N'vanik before pushing that aside. At least he wouldn't be
bored. But then his brow furrowed. "How am I supposed to do well in
classes if I can't read?"
"It's going to mean extra work. In other words, we're going to get you set
up with a harper to help you learn as quick as we can. One of the
weyrlingstaff assistants, perhaps, along with your harper tutor, will be
responsible for getting everything through your head. Some classes will
have lectures and the practical ones will be hands-on so that won't be a
problem. It's the charts, history, that sort of thing you'll need help
with." She scratched her cheek and considered everything. "So, is this
really something you want to do? You don't have to, you know. It's your
decision."
Extra work. Jenackt scratched behind his ear and wished he had known about
all of this before he had made that deal. But, he supposed that the extra
knowledge would only be of help when he had to leave. A harper-taught person
had a better chance in the long run. And knowing maps...that made him pause.
That would be even better. He would know where he could go. Perhaps he could
use that to his advantage. This could all work for him and all he had to do
was to stand in front of a bunch of eggs once. Despite the extra work, he
was getting the better end of the deal, he realized. He met Qorri's gaze and
nodded. "Yes."
"Allright then first things first. Pack your things and we're going to get
you moved into the barracks and introduced to the weyrlingstaff. I'll work
out your chores and class schedule with them and then I'll see about the
tutoring." **Another
project. Why oh why do I have a bad feeling about this one? He isn't stupid
though**
Qorri got up and headed out of her office with him. "Meet me at
the barracks when you've got everything okay?"
He didn't have much. Just a couple of changes of clothes, really. So
he nodded; it wouldn't take long. "I'll be there in just a moment."
~*~
Qorri spoke with the weyrlingmaster on duty before heading inside the
candidate barracks. She figured out which cots were empty and picked one
out. There were candidate knots and everything in the foot locker
that he might need.
Jenackt entered the barracks with only a small satchel containing his
few clothing. He saw Qorri and stepped quietly behind her and cleared
his throat.
She turned around and faced him. "All right then. This is the cot that will
be yours. Your cotmates are at lessons but you'll meet them later. Most of
what you'll need should be here. If there is something else, let one of my
assistants know." She handed him a hide. "Your schedule is here. You will
meet the Weyrlingmaster tonight and then your lessons and classes and
chores will start tomorrow. I'll let you know when I have a harper
scheduled to assist you. You will need to meet with the Weyrwoman in a few
days' time. She will have to give you permission to Stand so prepare
yourself for that. Any questions?"
And it was the moment of truth-his last chance to say no.
He took the hide and looked down at it, pausing before slowly looking back
up to her. "This really isn't going to help me. I can't read it." There was
frustration flickering about in his expression. He didn't ask any more
questions, but sat on the cot and stared at the knots with an unreadable
look on his face.
"I know you can't, but your cotmates can. Being a dragonrider is about being
part of a team and working together. So this is your first lesson. You will
have to depend upon them to help you get through this. Perhaps in return,
you have some skills they could use. Either way, the Weyrlingmaster will
find you. Till then you can unpack your things and look around the
barracks." She thought he could manage that.
Well wher dung. Jenackt hadn't ever worked in a team of more than just two.
Teamwork. Lovely. Unable to hide the disgruntlement on his face, he nodded.
"Fine. Thank you for your help, Headwoman."
