Pierka

Pierka

Pierka had been thinking about her condition, no it was more like
marinating in a situation that wasn't really getting any better. No
matter how much she tried to distance herself, she couldn't hide in
her weyr forever. She finally came to a decision and rode Liddith down
to the weyrbowl. Then screwing up her courage she went looking for the Headwoman.

At that point, Qorri had actually finished dealing with some candidates
that needed her attention. New robes, bedfurs, and all that. Some of them
had changed chore assignments due to their turns so she had managed to
get all of it squared away and was heading out of the barracks.

She saw the woman bustling as usual and an affectionate smile curved
her lips. No one in her short memory had ever 'mothered' her like
Qorri. Whether she knew it or not, to a person with no memory of any
family at all, that was a very big thing.

"Qorri," she called to get her attention.

Looking up, she located the voice and a faint smile came over her when she
saw it was Pierka. The greenrider had finally finished her weyrlinghood and
was now in the wings. Qorri had heard the latest about her being pregnant,
though, and even by whom. It wasn't what she had wanted for Pierka-but so it was.
And she wouldn't judge the greenrider. Stopping in her tracks, she waited
for the younger girl to catch up. "What may I do for you, Pierka?"

Pierka hurried up to her side and started walking in the direction
Qorri had been going so as not to detain her. "Well ma'am," she
smiled. "I expect you've heard I'm pregnant, and I was thinking
about my weyr. It's on the sea side and that's fine for now but it's
going to get harder to move around." She suspected Qorri probably
knew things in the Weyr almost before the Weyrwoman. "So, if you
have something inside and closer to the ground..." she let her voice
trail off hopefully.

"To be perfectly honest, I don't right now. But...in a few months when
you need it I will." She knew someone who was going to be moving up
higher once their injuries healed and Qorri had the weyr in mind for
Pierka. "If you happen to need it sooner, I can perhaps make
arrangements for something else." She didn't know how far along
the girl was and didn't guess.

"Alright," Pierka smiled. It was enough to know they'd thought of it
already and she'd have what she needed when the time came. She had a
ways to go and she knew it. "Is there anything else I should be doing
to get ready?" Pierka truly didn't know what to expect or how to prepare.

"Well, I'd advise you to go ahead and pack up the things you don't need
while you still can. You'll also need some larger clothing which I
have some of in stores. Pierka, do you have a chamberpot?" Qorri knew it
wasn't something some discussed, but it needed to be.

Pierka nodded at the instructions on packing. She'd known she'd have
to do it sooner or later. "Um, no I don't," she answered the odd
question. "My clothes are feeling a bit tight," she nodded.

"Well we'll get you one because there will be times when you have to go
and you won't be able to make it to the necessary." Qorri had seen it all
too often.

"Yes ma'am," she nodded. "Do you have time now or should I come back
later?" She knew Qorri had duties to attend to and Pierka wasn't the
only person whose needs she handled.

"I've got time." They kept extra for the infirmary's use and it
wasn't hard to get one of those. Qorri led Pierka to the storage area
where those supplies were kept. "So how do you feel about this baby, Pierka?"

"I'm not really sure," she said and smoothed the fabric over her
softly rounded belly. "I don't have any family that I know of, so
it will be nice to have someone. But it's scary at the same time."

"Aye it is scary. Have you ever seen a birthing?" That was an important
question and if she said no, that needed to be rectified. She needed to know
what she was getting into.

"No," she said. She didn't think she'd had the need. "I really don't
know what's going to happen. I mean, I've seen dolphins give birth."

"I think we need to get you setup with Vandor then. You should at least
know what you're getting into." Qorri tried to think of something else.

Pierka nodded. "I went to see him when I was having bad morning
sickness," she smiled. "He gave me a diet that really worked to help
me deal with it. Though I do miss bread."

Qorri had never been on a diet in her life and she was not about to start
now. Pregnancy had long passed her by so she wasn't worried about it.
"That's good then. There will come a point though when you shouldn't get
sick. That's when you have to eat for the baby."

"Well by then I should be able to keep the food down," she smiled.

"Indeed." She stopped in front of a door. "Well I need to go and make sure
we're not being overrun by spinner webs, but I will check on those things for you.
And keep eating." Qorri gave a mock stern look at that.

"Yes, ma'am," Pierka smiled with genuine warmth at the headwoman. "And
thank you."
