When she came back to her weyr after she'd completed her duties, The
children were with their foster mother and the kitchen had sent up a
nice meal for the two of them.
Of course she looked a little longingly at the wine but picked up
water instead to pour herself a glass. Taking it to the table she
pulled out a chair and leaned on her elbows to rub her temples. Today
had been harder than she'd originally expected. Though she had to
admit the loss wasn't hers she felt for Jeyme and wished it had gone
differently.
Added to what had happened a couple of weeks before with D'hol she was
feeling just a little guilty. Not becuase of anything she'd done or
said. Just because sometimes life sucked. Her guilt stemmed more from
her own personal happiness.
She had it good, almost perfect in fact and after the challenges of
the last few Turns she was finally in love with a good man who
appreciated her in a very physical way along with the romance.
A smile curved her lips as she thought about the tall dark brownrider.
Lucky indeed!
"I hope some of those thoughts are about me," K'deren said in a teasing tone
as he entered their weyr, dropping a stack of clean clothing atop the couch
for a moment.
She grinned at the handsome brownrider. "Reading my mind again," she
stood and walked over to him. "I was just thinking how lucky I am to
have met you that first day here."
"Oh I think the luck was mine," he said. "You changed my life."
She put her hands on his chest and lifted her face for a warm
welcoming kiss. "As you did mine," she acknowledged.
"What brought that on?" he asked after a moment, when the kiss broke.
"Oh, I just realized how much I have to be thankful for." She patted
his chest. "D'hol's young greenrider, Jeyme miscarried last night,"
she said. "I went to see her in the infirmary today."
"Is she okay?" immediately his thoughts went out to them. Losing anyone was
hard enough, but a child before it had even arrived had to be incredibly
hard.
"The healers seem to think so." She took a deep breath. "I talked to
her for a little bit. She's taking in pretty hard."
"Poor thing," he said, reaching to hold her close, realising there was more
to come. "Has she someone to speak to, beside D'hol that is?"
"I am not sure. I'll have to ask Qorri if she had any other
friendships among the candidates. But I'm sure Sh'del will look after
her." She also knew she couldn't help the fears the whole incident had
seemed to engender in her. Her head lay against his chest while he
held her. "I don't want to lose our baby," she whispered.
"I don't want you to lose it either," he held her close. "Everything is
okay, isn't it, the healers would tell us otherwise?"
"I'm sure they would," she said. "But I'll go see Vandor just to be
positive." She'd only had a problem once but she'd lost the baby only
two months before it was due to be born. It had been traumatic and
heartbreaking.
"Do you want me to come with you?"
"No, it's okay really," she said thankful that he'd offered. "It's
just with Jeyme's miscarriage and the rumors I'm feeling odd at the
moment." She smiled and hugged him. "But thank you for offering."
He returned the hug. "Come and find me afterwards and let me know what he
says."
"Sure," she smiled. "And then we can take the kids down to the dining
hall for dinner tonight. They're serving Trievan's favorite sausages."
"Well I can't let him miss out, can we."
"No," she smiled. "That would be bad."
