J'ackt

J'ackt

When it came time for his kitchen chores, Jenackt reported back to the
kitchens and immediately went to the rear of the caverns. In the cold,
carcasses needing to be butchered hung and he eyed them with a sigh as he
picked up a long knife. Testing it carefully with his thumb, he pulled on
his apron and headed to the first, a small wherry.

Qorri hummed as she went through her morning chores. The Headwoman walked
inside, checking the list of meat cuts that would be needed for the stew.
Her head came up when she saw Jenackt working. "Ah good day, candidate
Amitko. You found your assignment list?"

He went still. Shards and blast N'vanik, but this was a conversation he
really didn't want to have; Qorri was suspicious enough of him. He glanced
over at her and nodded. "I did." He shifted on his feet and sighed.
Sometimes it was better just to get things over with. "It's Jenackt. Not
Amitko."

Looking over at him, she was quiet as a confused look came over her face. "I'm
pretty sure I know your name. I mean, I have a file with your name on it.
And it's Amitko." She ignored him as if he was acting out.

He sighed deeply and put down his knife. **This is not going to be
pleasant...** He turned to face her. "No, it's not. N'vanik told me I had to
let people know..." He ran a hand through his hair and shifted on his feet.
"I lied about my name. My name is Jenackt, not Amitko. "

That made her think. **There are only so many reasons why he would lie about
his name. Most of them aren't good.** "And why did you do that?"

At that, Jenackt paused and looked at Qorri warily. She already didn't trust
him and didn't like him; N'vanik had said it was up to him if he wanted to
talk about why he had given a fake name. Unspoken, however, was the fact
that the Weyrleader didn't want him to lie about it either. Just not talk
about it. "I thought I had to. It's...not something I want to talk about."

"Let me get this straight. You're going to come in here, tell me you lied
about your name and that you're really someone else and you're not going to
tell me why. That's disrespect and I will not tolerate it." And if the
reasons why meant possible danger to her candidates-she would keep them safe
and would not allow someone who lied in their midst. Liars couldn't make
good dragonriders anyway. "So your duties are over. Go ahead and go to the
barracks to gather your things."

His jaw dropped slightly before he mastered his surprise. He looked down at
the knife in his hand and put it down. What was the use of explaining? She
had always hated him and now just had her excuse to get rid of him. "N'vanik
told me to tell people the truth." He bit out. "About my name. He told me
that I didn't have to say anything else. That it was up to me." He shrugged
out of his smock and flung it down next to the knife. "Should have shaffing
known better."

"N'vanik-you're telling me the Weyrleader knew and he didn't tell me?" Her
mouth went into a thin line. The boy better not be lying now because if he
was-Qorri was going to check his story. She did not abide liars. **And if
N'vanik didn't think I needed to know, of course the boy wouldn't think I
needed to know.** She was not happy, not by a long shot. "And the
Weyrlingmaster?"

"Only since the Hatching. I thought he would have told you." Jenackt eyed
her as though he believed that in any moment she might take the knife after
him. It was similar to how one would act around a rabid canine...wary. "I
told him, just like I'm telling you."

"Amit-Jen-whoever you are-stay here. I'm going to see about this." She
grabbed her list and stormed off, clearly on a mission.
