Description: Man, this job stinks.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 5, day 8 of Turn 7
It had been sixteen minutes since this batch of numbweed had settled, and the worst of the stink had passed, but Lokkun's sinuses still felt as though they had melted and trickled out his nose despite the cloth he'd worn over his face during the stewing and stirring. It probably didn't help that he was in charge of delivering the batch on a push-cart to the Weyrdragonhealer, and thus had to be around it longer. But that was part of being an apprentice, and Lokkun was used to it. He hauled on the push-cart's handles and wheeled it to the left, looking around to see how close he was to the appropriate storage area.
Y'gel smelled it before he saw the young healer wheeling in the new supply of Numbweed. "Ahh," he smiled. "The fragrant treasure." He walked toward the young man. "I heard there was a new batch coming. " He used two fingers to summon a pair of apprentices over then pointed to a counter nearby. "Bring it over there."
"Yez, zir," Lokkun said, and was dismayed to hear his voice still sounded slightly congested. Great. Well, at least no one would hold it against him. He sighed, shrugged, and started shoving the push-cart in the appropriate direction. With help from the other apprentices, he wrestled one container onto the counter, and started on the next.
Y'gel followed the cart to where the apprentices began the process of putting the freshly made treasure into smaller special containers so the large ones could be returned to the Headwoman and her kitchens. He put a sample into a much smaller jar and lifted it to the light turning in to several different angles before smelling it and then touching it with his little finger. "Looks good," he said to no one in particular.
Then he took a look at the delivery boy. "How you doing there son?"
"My eyeballz haven't melted like my zinuzez, so there'z that," Lokkun quipped, leaning on the handle of the push-cart and scrubbing his nose with the back of a suede-covered wrist. "My zenze of zmell zhould recover by tonight, and the rezididual ztink zhould be gone in time for my fire-lizard to get hiz daily znugglez."
Y'gel chuckled and put a hand on the young man's shoulder. "I can imagine. But I doubt your firelizard will mind. They're pretty immune to those kinds of smells. Besides, you can go soak in one of the bathing pools and that should take care of it."
Lokkun just chuckled. "You haven't met Pegaz," he said, and raised his voice to a chirp, giving a childlike tone to a fire-lizard's very simple, wordless thoughts and emotions. "Naztybad! I go bye-bye!" He smiled in amusement, then turned his head into his shoulder to sneeze. Something popped in his face and ears, and he felt marginally better after a sniffle. "Whew. Okay, there we go. So while I'm here, sir, is there anything you'd like me to take back to the Healers?"
Y'gel snorted. He'd never had a firelizard but he knew a gold one rather well. Jewel was rather well behaved and even crooned bo Brigel when he started to fuss at times. Though it was very rare the boy wasn't somehow attached to his mother.
He waved a hand in front of his nose in a futile attempt to clear some of the stench. "Yes," he nodded. "Tell them next time I'll send the bottles over and you can just fill therm there."
"Thank you, sir. That will be very helpful. I'll tell them right away." Lokkun turned the push-cart around. "I'll see you next time."
Y'gel chuckled as he headed back to his office. If nothing else the young man was entertaining.
