Crayon Awards: Favorite New Male Persona (August 2013)

Physical Description of Persona:
Lokkun is long-legged, five-seven, and not getting taller. He's also pretty; put him in a pink dress, and it would take a second look to realize he's male. His yellow-blond hair is very thick and haphazardly styled (as he tends to cut it himself) and ending in the middle of his shoulder blades. The bangs are long enough that if Lokkun lowers his head, they partially conceal his face from the middle of his nose up.

He doesn't have much of a tan, and his face often has a somber expression. When he smiles, though, he looks bright and less distant. His nose is straight, and chin not quite rounded. His eyes are wide, slightly tilted up at the outside edges, and mid-toned amber, with thick lashes. Lokkun's hands are gentle and deft, his grip sure, and strong from work and practice.

Lokkun's voice is smooth and mid-pitched. His favorite outfit is a blue shirt with a hem that ends at the middle of his thighs; there's a gap in the short sleeves from cuffs to neck, held together loosely by laces. Tall black boots, emerald green pants, and yellow armbands complete it. (No, he's not color-blind; he just doesn't have much fashion sense.)

Emotional Description of Persona:
Lokkun is a quiet, somewhat shy, solitary sort who doesn't talk a lot, but polite and friendly once he warms up to a person. Despite his loner tendencies, he's one of those folks who genuinely cares for others, possessing a very sympathetic side, and would have made a good mind-healer if he'd been inclined to take that path. He also loves his family and friends deeply. He's intuitive, which makes it easy for him to match someone's pace and "wavelength", and understand what they're trying to say even if they're tongue-tied. It's also handy for realizing when someone's behind him.

He tries to keep his equilibrium, and for the most part, he succeeds: It takes a lot to make him angry, and if by chance he blows his top, he tends to get over it quickly. He is learning to accept what he can't change, but it still pains him to acknowledge his limits. This is one reason why he chose physical therapy: He wouldn't be able to handle the losses that come with the triumphs in surgery or other branches of healing.

Lokkun likes reading, noodles, small spaces, playing the flute, watching sunsets, and seeing people happy. He dislikes idiots, rudeness, seeing people who are hurting, and when someone succeeds in sneaking up on him. (He has a tendency to yelp in a very embarrassing way when it happens.)

History of Persona:
Lokkun was born without fanfare or fuss, and grew into a calm, biddable child, with chores, time with his family, and harper lessons -both musical and educational- to keep him busy. When he was old enough, he apprenticed to the Herders as a shepherd, becoming organized and dedicated to keeping the animals as safe as possible. It was during those days Lokkun could find the most serenity as he came to appreciate Pern's beauty. It was an honest, uneventful life. Lokkun was certain it would be smooth sailing for a long time.

Life had other plans. Lokkun had been friends (and secretly in love) with two Candidates, Miyan (the owner of the sash) and Azeali (the owner of the headband), for some time, and remained in touch with them when they Impressed from the same clutch. However, M'yan and Azeali were killed in their first Threadfall as they ferried firestone. Barely a sevenday after, Lokkun's mother unexpectedly keeled over at work. It was suspected a blood vessel had burst in her brain. The boy was staggered by the losses; it was the first time anyone close to him had died, and he didn't know how to deal with the grief. His family and a fellow shepherd apprentice insisted he see a counselor.

It took time, but Lokkun was able to move past his sadness and turn it into a desire to help people more directly than shepherding. Thus he apprenticed to the healers. So far, things are working out, and Lokkun feels he can better face whatever life throws at him now.

Family and Friends
Elan, 63, Journeyman woodcrafter (Father)
Airina, 6, Deceased (Mother)
Farlora, 35, Journeywoman fire-lizard vet (Older sister)

Pets

Pegas, Blue Firelizard: aged 10, hatched m5 d7
If ever there was a one-person fire-lizard, it's Pegas. He loves Lokkun even more than plants love water and sunshine, and is around him nigh constantly. Not that Pegas goes out of his way to ignore or be rude to other fire-lizards and people; he actually does like socializing with his brethren, and he thinks running messages is fun. But Lokkun is one of the only people he'll listen to and take commands from, and at the end of the day, Pegas' best reward is a scritch and a nuzzle.

He looks surprisingly like a racing equine in build, and is a rich, deep navy blue, with an ultramarine mark on his face that looks like a simplified bridle. His paws are ultramarine as well, and ultramarine highlights the feather-like markings on his wingsails.
