Cyradis came into the council chambers from her weyr expecting K'deren
to follow shortly. With D'hol still injured she wasn't sure if he'd be
able to attend or discuss the placement of this class of werylings or
would leave it to his 'second. She'd tried to stay at a distance since
he'd recovered consciousness for Jeyme's sake if nothing else.
Now there really was only one choice of where to place the greenrider
but she didn't want to be the one to suggest it.
After his release from the infirmary, D'hol had attempted to be
immediately back at work, but the sad fact was that he wasn't
rebounding as quickly as he had in his youth. He felt better, though
there were still headaches that the Healers insisted would fade. This
meeting would mark his return in some sort of official capacity,
though the actual flying would have to be managed by K'deren. He
entered into the council chambers quietly and sat.
Cyradis nodded as he took his seat. "How are you feeling," her
question held genuine concern.
Saibra sailed in directly behind D'hol, having been relieved to see
the man on his feet and heading in the same direction. Chioneth had
been happy to inform her that Yumath's rider was awake again and
recovering. These type of meetings were the ones that Saibra really
enjoyed as it meant that another group of dragonriders were ready to
join the fighting Wings, strengthening the Weyr further.
"Cyradis, D'hol," she nodded to the Wingleader and Weyrwoman as she
took her seat beside of Cyradis.
"Saibra." D'hol inclined his head and turned to Cyradis. "Better than I
was."
D'naz made his way to the meeting room. He was almost as excited as he
knew the weyrlings were. It was like watching his own children grow up
and make their own way. He couldn't wait to see which wing each was
chosen for. All of them were worthy. No one would be disappointed with
any of the weyrlings in their wing.
Glancing around he noted that he was the first from the Weyrlingstaff
to arrive. He nodded towards those already gathered, "Cyradis, D'hol,
Saibra. Exciting day for our young ones?" He couldn't help the big
proud papa grin that formed on his face as he took his seat.
K'deren came into the chambers, pausing behind Cyradis for a moment to
gently lay a hand on her shoulder before taking his own seat.
N'vanik entered, greeting everyone as he took a seat. He knew which
weyrlings he had an eye on. Even after all this time, he still got a
thrill over getting first pick of the new riders. Or getting a pick at
all. He'd never led a wing before becoming Weyrleader.
Cyradis lifted a hand to touch K'deren's fingers before he took his
seat next to D'hol. But she smiled at N'vanik before answering D'naz.
"It is," she replied. "and we have quite a good crop. Shall we start?"
She looked to N'vanik.
A hint of a smile touched his lips. "I'm taking L'cor."
Glancing at K'deren before he spoke, D'hol leaned back in his seat for
a moment. "You'll need Jeyme as well. I don't want any accusations of
favoritism being leveled." He looked at the list of weyrlings and
continued smoothly. "I want S'avn."
"Now how did I know that was going to happen," she grinned at N'vanik.
"And actually," Cyradis added to D'hol. "I'll take Jeyme. And that
brownrider T'fen."
Saibra's eyebrows raised at the placement of Jeyme and S'avn but she
remained silent, trusting in the judgment of her Weyrwoman. D'hol, on
the other hand, she had to wonder about the motives behind his
decision.
"You could have had a strong greenrider for your wing, but you had to
go and weyrmate her," N'vanik teased D'hol. "I'm tempted to fight you
for her, Cyradis."
"It just means my decision benefited the other wings." He replied smoothly. "You can't tell me that there's not any more good greenriders out of all these weyrlings." D'hol arched a brow at N'vanik. "K'deren, do you think this Malyna would be a good fit?" D'hol glanced over at his Wingsecond.
"I think she might be, and if we can perhaps assign one of our more
experienced rider to mentor her," K'deren said after a moment to think, and cast his eyes along the list. "We do need blueriders though, C'baz might be a good fit."
And as it always did, the conversation kept circling the table until
all the Weyrlings had been spoken for.
"Is that the last of them then," Cyradis asked as she checked through
her list. She was pleased with her acquisitions but particularly with
Jeyme. That young woman had a good head on her shoulders and though
she knew their might be a bit of tension at first she could smooth
that one out and make D'hol uncomfortable in the process no doubt. She
looked up at the others with humor in her eyes.
"Are we done?"
Saibra gathered her ledgers together and stood, glad to be able to
stretch her joints. She didn't know the Weyrlings as well as the other
leaders so she trusted their judgment. She was excited to have new
riders in have new riders strengthen the wings.
N'vanik couldn't help thinking of the next class of weyrlings and how
small it was. Although on the bright side they had three breeding
golds now. Either Chioneth or Panitath would rise soon and should
provide a large clutch. **And if it's Panitath, I hope I get to keep
my job.**
