Cyradis

After learning a bit from Sh'del, Qorri nursed her feelings of anger,
betrayal, and disappointment until she couldn't handle it anymore. If
she didn't get it over with, it was going to effect everything else.
So she waited until she knew they would be together, then she
requested a meeting. When the time came, she wiped her hands on the
back of her apron and then walked through the doors. Her mouth
was closed and drawn and her eyes were dark but glaring. Her look was
of resignation and it was clear she was tired and unhappy.

N'vanik had his usual seat at the head of the table and Cyradis sat at
his right hand. She looked up when Qorri came in at the appointed
time. "Well," she smiled. "What can we do for you today Qorri?"

"Weyrwoman," she nodded to Cyradis, not yet addressing N'vanik though
she saw him. "I learned today that I have a candidate who lied upon arrival.I also learned that the Weyrleader became aware of it, told the Weyrlingmaster, but did not tell me. The candidate himself finally told me and when I asked why, he refused to answer me." She brought her head up and her gaze was icy.

"From this situation I have only to conclude that my authority was
circumvented. Without my authority, I cannot keep the candidates in my
care under control or demand respect from them as evidenced by this
young man. I also cannot complete my duties if I cannot count on trust
from my Weyrleaders in my abilities." Her hands were held at her side
and it was a struggle for her to stand there. Qorri's pride
had been badly damaged. This was her home. This was her blood, sweat,
and tears. And yet... "As I cannot complete my duties due to the
situation that has been created, I can only resign my position. I thought you both should know so you can find someone suitable. I can make a few recommendations."

"I see," said Cyradis carefully. "So let me see if I have this
correct. After the two of you took part of my duties and left
me only the wing to manage. A candidate comes who confides his secrets in the Weyrleader," her hand indicated N'vanik, "Who makes the
decision, executive decision to keep the information confidential. In point of fact, he did not tell me either. So, unless one of you enlighten me I'm afraid I should have to quit too." She raised an eyebrow at N'vanik. "Do I have it correct?"

"Woah, woah. Can we stop talking about quitting?" N'vanik looked from
Cyradis to Qorri. "Sh'del came storming into my office. I couldn't ignore him."

"So you're saying you could ignore me." That was not a point in his
favor. Qorri's shoulders set. She was almost ready to leave and go
pack her things. It would be hard but...she had heard something
about Emerald Falls still needing a Headwoman.

"I'm not going anywhere," she waved a hand at N'vanik. "I was just
trying to make a point."

"Qorri," she looked seriously at the Headwoman. Since I don't
know what this is about, perhaps you could enlighten me? What is it that has you so upset?"

"The boy that arrived-Amitko-turns out he has a different
name. When I asked him why he was using another one-he refused to answer me. He says the Weyrleader knew and told him he didn't have to tell me." Just reliving it was insulting all over again. "So I spoke with Sh'del. Sh'del knew. I was never told. Turns out-I was right. The boy is a safety risk and a danger to my other candidates." She wasn't going to say another word. Now was N'vanik's turn to explain himself.
Then hearing about the fight and what might have happened....

She couldn't say the situation didn't concern her but she did feel
Qorri was blowing it all out of proportion. On top of that her own
pregnancy hormones were making her react less that favorably to the
woman's ultimatum so she sealed her lips and waited for the Weyrleader
to respond.

N'vanik took a deep breath. "I found out some information about the
boy -- Jenackt. I had a discussion with him and explained that he had
to use his real name, but it was up to him what else he wanted to
share. I was trying to teach him some trust, and I thought sharing his
personal information would undermine that trust. If he was
disrespectful to you, we need to address that." Of course
Jenackt had misinterpreted what he said. He should have known. "I didn't share his personal information with Sh'del, either."

That all sounded perfectly like N'vanik doing his job as a good
Weyrleader should so Cyradis' eyes switched to the headwoman wondering
whether the woman still felt she had the need to know. Granted the
young man's attitude probably needed an adjustment but that would be
Sh'del's office if any. Not only that, but she'd learned to trust
N'vanik's judgment in a case like this.

"I am responsible for these candidates until they Impress. You willingly put all the rest of them in danger because you didn't tell
me what I needed to know in order to take precautions. And then you
allowed him to think that you didn't think I was important enough to
know and therefore I had no authority. Thankfully I wasn't publicly
undermined so the rest of them don't know that I know of unless he's told someone. However N'vanik if I cannot expect the same courtesy from my Weyrleader as you have apparently decided to bestow on
this boy who you've known only months, then I cannot perform my duties here. You trust him and not me." He was interfering with her job. He had damaged her opinion of him and indeed, her own trust in him.

"You're making some huge leaps." N'vanik considered Qorri a good
friend, but he'd never had patience for drama. "Yes, it was my mistake
not to make it clear that he _needed_ to explain himself to you and
Sh'del. That doesn't mean I don't trust you or that this is some kind
of conspiracy to undermine your authority or whatever you're
imagining. If anyone should be upset, it should be Cyradis
because Ididn't tell her anything either, and she has more authority than you."

She shook her head. He didn't get it. "He wouldn't have had to if
you had told us. And yes, the Weyrwoman should know too." Qorri took a
breath and tried to decide if it was worth getting into his thick head. He was a stubborn man and she knew this. "I never said anything about a
conspiracy-it was done and knowingly so. What I'm saying now is that you shouldn't do it again with whomever replaces me. Or even with the Weyrwoman and Sh'del. This time, it wasn't that big of an issue-it just got some candidate slightly injured luckily.Next time, though, it could be worse."

"May I ask a question," Cyradis said mildly. "N'vanik do you
believe this Jenackt is a danger to all the rest of the candidates?
Because that seems to be the main thrust of Qorri's displeasure with
us."

"No. The other Candidate started the fight, and did so with
two others. Jenackt was outnumbered and defended himself. He was wrong
not to walk away, but I can't blame him for reacting. I made it clear
that this shouldn't happen again." N'vanik needed to have another chat
with the boy to make sure he knew how serious this was.

Cyradis spread her hands, "Then I'm afraid I don't understand your
problem Qorri. You're angry because he mouthed off or lied? Most
candidates do at some point." She shook her head. "You're taking this
way too far and I suggest you either retract or we'll have no option
but to accept your resignation."

"I'm resigning because I was not told information I should have been
as well as the fact that a candidate was instructed through the Weyrleader's actions that I didn't have authority. N'vanik says now that it was never his intention to do so, but it was still done. And if he was given the situation to do over again, would he do it again? If he would, then I cannot work under those conditions." **I am not afraid. If I have to find another homethen I will. I did it once and I can do it again. But I will not worklike this.**

"Enough," Cyradis said. "If you cannot trust the Weyrleader or
Weyrwoman to do their jobs then that is _your_ problem and you do not
belong here. You must be able to follow your Weyrleaders
without questioning everything they do or say. I am very sorry to say
this because I've always thought you did a very good job here." Shook
her head sad to see this come to pass. "I cannot hold you here
against your will Qorri and. I'm sad you have decided you must take this step. But I will not try to prevent you."

N'vanik stood. "If you want to go, then _go_. The problem is that
_you_ don't trust _me_. I'm in charge of this Weyr, not you. And I'm
not going to spread someone's personal information, things I promised
them I'd keep in confidence, just to satisfy your ego. Pack your bags
and I'll loan you a dragon to wherever you want to
go. And that's thelast help from the Weyr you'll get." His fingernails dug into hispalms. After all the time they'd known each other, worked together ..."I don't need you."

"I don't question everything. However when I find out that a holdless
fugitive from Emerald Falls is a candidate under my care without my
knowledge, then I have an issue." **So this is what it comes
to. He's going to protect the boy over me? So be it.** "He's assaulted
people in the past, why wouldn't he do so now? Matter of fact, he has
already,fighting other candidates."

Cyradis stood next to N'vanik. "Be careful Qorri, If you make accusations like that be prepared for backlash from the Weyr. We're
done here." She turned and walked out of the room.

N'vanik was surprised that Cyradis not only supported him, but
seemed almost as upset as he was. "Jenackt was bullied and defended
himself.I dealt with the matter personally. Would you like to question
my authority some more?" He leaned on the table, glaring at Qorri.
Just when he thought people had stopped abandoning him.

"He defended himself? Against a girl?" She shook her head and then turned to go herself. "Very well Weyrleader, since you can take care of the candidates better than I can, I'll leave you to it. And don't trouble yourself, I can find a ride."Her voice was even. She showed none of the anger he was. Inside, though, she was so many different things. Still, Qorri had made something of her life through hard work. She could do so again if it called for it.
