Characters: J'ackt, X'dris
Description: Jenackt comes into the barracks, bloodied-up post fight, and Xandris
asks about the brawl.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 5, day 1 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentor Approved! :D Dayf's still adoptable if anyone wants to tackle
that train wreck. More coposts in this storyline or others are also good!
Sore, swollen and over all in a pretty rotten mood, Jenackt stalked back to
the barracks, a small jar of numbweed clutched in his hands. No doubt he
would feel worse in the morning and he wanted to be prepared; he'd taken
beatings before and knew that often the next day hurt more than the actual
event itself. His ribs creaked as he walked and his eye and jaw were
swollen, but he'd made sure that the other boys were going to feel their
own pains.
Ignoring the looks he was getting from the other candidates, he made his
way to his cot and gingerly sat down with a grimace.
Xandris considered Jenackt for a moment. There was never a dull day coming
to the barracks while he lived beside -this one. He'd chosen his location
well.
"You look like the wrong side of a wherry's ass. What happened?"
Peering through his good eye, Jenackt looked over at Xandris. "Wherries'
asses don't bleed." He leaned back on his pillow, moving slowly and with
obvious care. "Your buddy and his pals."
"Dayf?!" Xandris blurted in disbelief. He was the only possible option,
Larus would never start a fight to save his life.
He shook his head.
"What started it?"
"Whatever his name is." Jenackt grimaced and settled back, exhaling slowly.
Shards but his side hurt. "Called me a pretty boy. Put his hands on me."
Xandris let out a long breath and muttered a string of quiet expletives.
Well, he'd fixed that right up. Jenackt certainly wasn't "pretty" now.
"My friend's an idiot. Hopefully he got better than he gave."
"He has a better nose, and don't know if he'll be breeding any time soon."
Jenackt smirked, then gave a soft huff. "'S not so bad. Had worse from my
father." He lifted his arm and put it gingerly over his brow. His jaw
throbbed, but the painkillers he had been given in the infirmary had helped
with the acute pain.
Xandris gave out a hearty laugh at the breeding comment.
"Dayf doesn't need to breed, trust me."
He frowned at the comment about Jenackt's father.
"Well, maybe this is a good excuse to get one of the cuter women to rub
numbweed all over you."
Jenackt turned his head to stare at Xandris with his good eye. "So they can
have numb hands." He blinked. "I see a flaw in your plan there."
Xandris chuckled.
"That's only a problem if they put their hands in the wrong places.
I should go see how many pieces you left Dayf in. You gonna be all right?"
He snorted. "He's in one piece. Had two of his buddies with him, so he
didn't get all the bruises. " Jenackt exhaled. "Do you hold bred lot run in
packs or something?"
"Not really. Dayf likes to find people of a like mind and something dumb to
do," Xandris shook his head. Maybe this confirmed his fear that his friend
would be worse here than back home.
Jenackt was quiet for a moment as he considered that. He tapped his finger
along his brow. "Pack hunter, not strong by himself. Get him by himself and
he's a coward, right?"
Xandris watched Jenackt for a moment, hoping the other Candidate didn't
feel the need to poke that wher more than he'd already done.
"Eh. Half and half. He's more likely to keep his mouth shut, but he'll
still throw down like a wet feline if you bother him hard enough."
They'd had their tumbles in their younger years.
Jenackt pondered that, his eyes distant. The painkillers were really
kicking in now and it was harder to think. "He can hit hard, but he's not
agile. He's not limber. He relies on his size, not his speed."
"Get some rest, man," Xandris shook his head. "The fight's done, ya had
your hit, you'll both feel it in the morning."
"If he touches me again, I will kill him." Jenackt's voice was plain,
uninflected and dry. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath, and allowed
the painkillers to work their magic.
Xandris sighed and made his way out of the barracks to find Dayf. The
Candidate wondered if it might come to that. Dayf never seemed to know when
enough was enough.
