After checking in with the Weyrleader and then finding someone to get him a
weyr, he had at least unloaded Leith. Apparently this place didn't
have a Headwoman. **Beautiful** E'rae sighed
and decided it was time to see his new Wingleader. He would miss
K'sedel. He knew the man and how he operated. He knew his wingmates.
Now, he didn'tknow anything-conditions, formations, his wingmates, his
wingleaders. He felt like a weyrling all over again. To make matters
worse, he was still thinking it all over.
After a few questions, he found his way to the bronzerider's office.
With one knock, he waited, hoping this went better
than everything else. He needed something to just go right.
"Enter." D'hol looked over the hides in his hand and rubbed his chin. An
interesting report.
He walked inside and focused on the bronzerider in the seat. The man didn't
look any different than most of the Weyrleaders and Wingleaders he had
known. E'rae didn't dawdle and quickly presented himself. "Bluerider E'rae
of Leith reporting for duty, Wingleader."
"Have a seat, E'rae." D'hol was brisk as he examined the reports. "I am
D'hol, Yumath's rider." He flicked through the hides one last time and then
put them aside to examine E'rae from across the desk. "Have you been placed
in a weyr yet?"
E'rae sat and if D'hol was watching, he would have noticed the hunter's
grace. **D'hol** he repeated inside his head. "Yes sir, I have. Took some
doing though."
"Understandable." D'hol didn't need to elaborate on the lack of a headwoman.
"Tell me, E'rae, what do you believe your strengths are and what are your
weaknesses?"
That was an interesting question to open with and E'rae had to think that
D'hol liked to get to the heart of the matter quickly. Or to keep the other
person off guard. The bluerider considered the question and answered
thoughtfully.
"My strengths as a rider or my strengths as a person?"
There was a quirk of a brow. "Who you are as a person effects who you are as
a rider. Your personal matters are your own unless they effect the wing.
Then they become my problems. But my sole concern right now is how you will
integrate with the wing." This was simply said, no accusations or assumptions.
That was still not really an answer, but the bluerider didn't press
the point. So many things he would have said didn't seem true in light
of recent events.
He would have said loyalty but today he had left everything and
everyone he had ever
known. He would have said calm in the face of adversity but today he had lost it
completely. "I keep moving forward."
Despite leaving home for the Weyr, being disowned for Impressing blue,
almost dying from threadscore, the loss of the baby, the loss of
Bahji, and leaving home again-he was still here. He was trying to make
it. "As for weaknesses,
" **There are probably too many to count.** "I have a hard time
dealing with and expressing emotions."
D'hol took this in and nodded, making notations on the file. "And your
dragon? What are his strengths and weaknesses?"
"He's eager and can fly quite well with no confidence problem." It was hard
for any rider to admit his dragon had a weakness, but E'rae saw it as something
they had been working on for some time. "Leith can be easily distracted as well
as overexcited despite his turns. We've worked hard to improve those traits."
"What helps the most with countering his distraction?" D'hol sat
forward slightly, his mind already working.
"Several things...for example when we're not at work, I encourage him
to be as distracted as he wants. He can flit from green to green or go
smash trundlebugs
or whatever he wants. When it's time to work, he has to focus. It also
helps to find a way
to combine duties with things he would naturally pursue." The
bluerider had tried everything under
Pern. "My scar tends to serve as a reminder as well when he sees it."
Dragons didn't remember so
well but Leith saw it and then he knew E'rae had got it from him.
Nodding, D'hol put down the hides. "Sounds like a reasonable plan." He
flicked through his hidework, looking at the formations. "I'll expect
you on time for drills and the first few will be difficult for you."
He looked up to meet E'rae's eyes. "I want to see what you can do
before Thread falls. You'll be working closely with K'deren, my
wingsecond."
K'deren, old K'sedel's other son. **Right. Wonder if he's anything
like K'reyel?** E'rae nodded, accepting that this wasn't going to be
easy. Still, he
wasn't green and he was also a seasoned threadfighter so that was
something. This also wasn't
Dragonsfall so he didn't have to learn snow. "Understood."
"Good." D'hol rose and offered his hand to the blue rider. "Welcome to
Dolphin Cove, E'rae."
