Description: E'rae goes to see the Weyrwoman about his daughter.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 6, day 4 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Werenn, K'deren, Rhosyn
After asking around, E'rae figured his best bet was the Weyrwoman. So
he set up an appointment with her and hoped this would be rather
easy. He had never met Cyradis but most said the Dolphin Cove
Weyrwoman was pretty nice. Probably nothing like his crazy
Weyrwoman...well ex-Weyrwoman now. So there he stood outside her door,
waiting, with a measure of anxiety.
Cyradis got up from her desk pressing a hand into her right side where
the baby pushed against her ribs. The little waterball player had been
very active all morning and now had decided to stretch, rather
painfully for her. She was just pouring another cup of klah when she
heard movement in the corridor. "Come on in," she called.
He walked inside, shutting the door behind him. Since he did have an
appointment, he assumed he would be expected. "Bluerider E'rae to Leith
to see you Weyrwoman." He was quiet and cast a quick glance at the office
before bringing his dark eyes to settle on her. Another pregnant Weyrwoman..
pregnancy... **Stop thinking about babies and women. Focus on the task
at hand.**
"Welcome E'rae," she smiled. "Would you like a cup? It's fresh."
"That would be good, thank you." He didn't sit just yet since she was
still standing herself. The bluerider was actually trying to go over
all of his thoughts and options, organizing them before he told her
about the situation.
She poured the extra cup and took it to the bluerider with a smile and
after handing it to him walked around her desk and sat. "So tell me
what's on your mind."
"Well I need some advice. You see I have a daughter. She's currently being
fostered at River Bluff with my sister. My sister doesn't want to move here.
There's just another turn before Werenn will be old enough to apprentice or
petition to Stand or whatever she wants so she doesn't need to be fostered
overly long now. If I bring her here, I have to find someone to take care of
her."
He was still not sure that was the best thing to do, but he wanted her
close.
She looked at him seriously having just moved her own children barely
a Turn before. "What does _she_ want to do? Have you asked her?"
"No. Werenn will do whatever is decided for her then she will go her own way
when she reaches the proper turn. At one time, it was even discussed that
she
might be fostered at the Hold with my family but I wanted her close by so
she
remained at the Weyr since my sister remained." E'rae didn't even want
to go into the fact that he needed the reassurance of her presence
nearby. He needed to be able to assure himself that she was safe and
healthy and whole and alive.
Cyradis half smiled. "Alright," she said. "My youngest wasn't too keen
to move here and made us all abundantly aware of her displeasure.
Luckily she has a very understanding foster mother who helped her
through the transition." She didn't mention how much K'deren had done
for the girl.
E'rae's idea of obedience was obviously different. Werenn was also not
that type of girl for the most part. "Basically, I need to know if I
do bring her here, if there would be someone who could watch her for a
turn. For the most part, she would be on her own since she'd have
chores during the day and harper lessons. It's mostly just the
evenings."
"Yes," the Weyrwoman nodded. "We have several foster mothers who might
be appropriate. I could make up a list if you'd like to talk to them first."
"That would be good I think." Since his sister had fostered Werenn, E'rae
had
made sure that she was given most of the same values he was. Of course
growing
in a Weyr was different, naturally, but Werenn still had the same basic
beliefs that
he did. He was wary of change for many reasons, though saw the necessity.
"Any special requirements?" The Weyrwoman recognized a caring father
when she saw one and was certain she could make better recommendations
if she knew exactly what he was looking for.
"My sister...Werenn is used to someone who is not very loud or colorful like
some Weyr women can be. So I think someone like that would help her adjust
quicker." He hoped he said that diplomatically.
Cyradis nodded and smiled. "I know what you mean, my daughter is the
same way. We have several women here who would meet your needs.
Additionally, there is Dolphin Hall just a short walk from the Weyr,
I'm sure the Headwoman there would also have some options for you."
"I want her here. A Hall would be too much change I think. But if you could
perhaps help me meet these women? I would like this done soon." He wanted
to leave just then to get Werenn, but he could wait.
"Alright," Cyradis nodded and pulled a piece of paper to her. "Here
are a couple of names and their locations. I'll let them know to
expect you." She pushed the paper across her desk toward the
bluerider. "Ranari is an experienced foster mother and quite
conservative in her views. She came here with her crafter husband.
Lutina is Weyr raised but also quite conservative. She only has two
other children right now and one is a girl Werenn's age."
E'rae considered both and nodded. His next item of business was to
meet these women and figure out which would work. Then he could get
Werenn. He could have her here. And he wouldn't be alone. "Thank you
Weyrwoman. I will talk with them and see which will be better."
"You're welcome," she smiled and stood. "Please feel free to return if
you have any further needs. At least until we have our new
Headwoman up to speed and then you'll be able to take it up with her.
