"What was your Wingleader like at River Bluff?" S'avn asked E'rae as
they soaked out in the cool ebbing of the ocean water around Dolphin
Cove. Wing drills were over for the day, and for once, S'avn had
escaped without incurring D'hol's wrath. That was practically a
miracle for S'avn, who often put his foot in his mouth around the
temperamental Wingleader.
"Well..Weyrleader K'sedel is quite old now. Our other Wingleader is
about his turns and had to retire so it might be time at some point
for K'sedel to but he's still doing allright so far. Anyway, he's been
doing it for a long time now so he's sort of got a whole routine. He's
a very steady man. Very even keel. It works well since the Weyrwoman
isn't." It was hard to think that K'sedel wasn't his Wingleader anymore,
but E'rae had to remember that.
"She's not?" S'avn asked, glancing over at his wingmate. He had heard
a lot of stories about the River Bluff Weyrwoman but, then again, he
heard a lot of stories about _all_ of the goldriders and Weyrleaders.
Weyrfolk loved to gossip. He never knew what was true and what was
not.
"Yeah she's umm...very lively." Of course it meant more parties and good
food and things to talk about so E'rae didn't much care. "Course she keeps
her personal and her business straight so it doesn't make a difference for
the Weyr I don't guess." He shrugged. He hadn't been very personal with
Rhosyn being a bluerider and all.
"Well, at least that kept things exciting, I suppose. Our Weyrwomen
here are rather boring, unless you count Cyradis' 'thing' with
Wingleader D'hol, and Saibra's tendency to sleep with anything that
has two legs." S'avn shrugged, he supposed each Weyr had their own
quirks.
One of E'rae's brows rose. "Oh.." At a different time, E'rae might have
found that curious. Right now, though, he wasn't worried about sex or
women. "I imagine Weyrwomen often lead on many of the bronzeriders
so if another caught, she'd know she could work with him. Wingleaders
of any sort would be...a good choice."
"I doubt physical relationships are required for a good working
relationship." S'avn shrugged, he was just a holdbred bluerider
though, so perhaps he didn't understand it. You could have a
partnership and work well together without the added bonus of sex,
even in the context of a mating flight. "I am just thankful to have
Impressed a blue where I will never have to worry about those sorts of
things."
"Not required, no, but if they are amenable beforehand, a change in
leadership
wouldn't be as hard. For example...at my old Weyr, things probably wouldn't
go well if bronzerider M'galec caught the senior queen. The two of them hate
each other." E'rae shrugged, thinking about it. Being a bluerider had its
own complications.
Like being on the bottom of the totem pole, losing everything to
bronzeriders,
and losing your own family.
S'avn didn't really know where he fit in. He was completely uncomfortable
with
men, despite having an attraction to them, and while he was more comfortable
with women he felt that they were too much drama. Thus, he was even more
grateful for the lowly status of bluerider where he rarely had to deal much
with
anyone outside his Wing. E'rae was an exception as he was generally easy to
be
around, S'avn thought.
"We all have to worry about the Weyrleaders though since they effect all of
our
lives. If you have an incompetent Weyrwoman, the Weyr doesn't run. If you
have a
mean Weyrleader, the wings are unhappy." He shook his head. Dung travelled
downhill.
"Course...this is a new Weyr so I'm just trying to fly straight."
"Well I would say I am trying to do the same but I always end up with my
foot in my
mouth around the leadership. Never fails." He squinted against the sunlight
on the water.
"Yeah that's why you keep your mouth shut." E'rae nodded gravely.
The unexpected reply made S'avn laugh, and he looked over at E'rae, "Yes, I
am learning that."
Having spent enough time in the water, the older bluerider grunted and then
got up.
"And now we go to dinner." Grabbing a towel, he nodded to S'avn before
heading in
the direction of his new weyr.
