Description: G'nir calls the Weyr leadership together to discuss some interesting news.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 7, day 11 of Turn 7
Notes: Mentioned: Yanley; Pt 1 of 2
She had dressed in one of her better gather outfits, though she was
not quite sure why. Her hair was beautifully swept up and she held a
stack of hides in one hand. G'nir had called this meeting, but she
already knew what was going to be discussed. They hadn't told anyone
else, yet.
And _she_ hadn't told anyone.
She had been up all night thinking, though it surely did not show in
her appearance.
She could not wait to see what the next candlemark brought for the Weyr.
She stepped into the conference room where they normally met for Wing
meetings, and smiled at the few already gathered.
She glanced around the room, wondering if she had arrived before G'nir.
J'darin stepped in shortly after Hygalia and smiled his best
bronzerider smile at their lovely Weyrwoman. Maybe one of these
times, Hasaarth would catch her queen. That would show G'nir!
He loved being a Weyrlingmaster, but it was so very hard on the heart.
To be honest, though, being a Weyrleader hadn't been any easier.
"Good day Weyrwoman." He bowed from his waist in respect, heading to
the table with klah to pour himself a glass.
G'nir walked in next, holding _the letter_ and some other hides under
his arm. "Hygalia," there was unusual warmth in his voice. "J'darin,"
his tone turned to carefully maintained neutrality that hid the usual
bronzerider rivalry.
U'kaiah and D'ale weren't far behind the others. Fresh from their own
meeting with their wing they were discussing one of the riders in Cyan
when they entered. D'ale nodded to the Weyrleaders politely. U'kaiah's
nod to G'nir was more curt than polite but then that was just part and
parcel of their relationship. "Hygalia," he smiled. "You're looking
lovely today," he said warmly.
"Good morning," Teseada said. The table was filling as the remaining people
came in to the room.
Hygalia smiled at G'nir, her eyes shining at her Weyrleader. As the rest
came in, she nodded to U'kaiah. "Thank you, U'kaiah. I do try." Her
smile warmed and brightened at the handsome bronzerider, then she turned to
find her own seat, passing her 'Second on the way.
"Hello Teseada." Hygalia nodded to her fellow goldrider. "Congratulations
on Onnyth's beautiful daughter, by the way. Lissath and Genna are
shaping up beautifully." it was a genuine congratulations, though she still
desperately wished it had been her Genith that had laid the gold egg.
J'darin only nodded, though respectfully, to his Weyrleader and took his own
seat along the side, cup of klah in hand. He had thoughtfully brought one
for Teseada and Hygalia, carrying the 3 cups in his clever carver fingers.
Hygalia took her seat next to G'nir's at the head of the table and laid out
her hides. Her attention fastened on her Weyrleader. What would
everyone think?
There was a genuine sm,ile of thanks on Teseada's face as she looked up at
J'darin. "Thank you," she said as she took the drink. Turning to Hygalia,
she continued. "I'm sure that Genith will have a fine clutch on the sands
soon enough, something that will rival Onnyth's."
Taking his seat on G'nir's other side as usual, P'nal nodded to
everyone, but was quiet as he waited to see what this was about. It
wasn't their usual leader meeting. He raised a brow in J'darin's
direction, wondering if the bronzerider knew what was up.
E'near tried to blend into a background. He felt out of place. He was
standing in for T'mahl, who was busy solving some crisis or other among
weyrlings.
G'nir took a quick head count. "Everyone's here, good. Now, to the business
at hand. We received yesterday a letter from North," he nodded towards
Hygalia to indicate they both received it. "They are opening a new weyr in
North. As you well know, while the northern continent is much smaller than
our southern, it's more densely populated and grubs never set in there as
well as here. When we are flying Fall, most of it fells to a unpopulated
wilderness while they have large populations centers to protect. The
Northern Weyrs are asking help from all the Pern's Weyrs to build this new
Weyr. Mostly they need ranking dragonriders...bronzeriders, golds..blues and
greens with leadership experience," G'nir paused and let the letter to go to
circulating among the wingleaders and their 'seconds.
"If any of you are interested to go, let me know. There's a good chance to
rise to become a Weyrleader," that was meant for the other bronzeriders.
G'nir already knew he was not going back to North. He was Weyrleader here
and now. Even if next gold Flight might change it. Besides, Dragonsfall was
_home_, in way the Norhern Weyr he had been never was.
U'kaiah shifted in his chair the words of his foster mother ringing
clear in his memory. **Weyrleader** he could do that and was ambitious
enough to let G'nir know it at every opportunity. There was no love
lost between him and Dragonsfall's current Weyrleader but once again
Kalamath had not been chosen and he wondered if things would be
different at new Weyr. Of course Aileyan and Tavia might have
something to say about it. He nodded and raised a finger when G'nir
looked at him. He _was_ interested and somehow his ladies would
understand and come with him.
G'nir nodded as a response to U'kaiah's gesture. He was more than
happy to send him away. He wouldn't even mind if he became Weyrleader,
as long as it wasn't in the same Weyr he was living in.
J'darin considered the offer for less than a second. This _was_ his home
and even if training Weyrlings was all he did for the rest of his life, he
supposed that someone had to do it and he, at least, trained them well and
loved them even more. Devyn, too, would keep him here. Forever. He would
do whatever it took to make her happy.
Hygalia had waited, wondering if anyone would dare speak up to this offer.
She had thought long and hard last evening about this very question.
Was Dragonsfall her home now? She felt some kinship here, yes. But she
also craved a place that was wholly hers. Wholly hers and Genith's.
There were shadows here of strong Weyrwomen and Weyrleaders that made it
seem as if she was just minding it for the next gold who chose to come.
Onnyth had hatched the newest gold for this Weyr, not her Genith. She was
convinced Genith would lay daughters if needed, and a new Weyr would need
queens.
When no one spoke, she took a small sip of her klah, then reached up to her
shoulder and carefully undid the knots that marked Dragonsfall her Weyr.
"I will go." She said it simply, no explanation. She would go.
