"Dayf," Tanlis said, catching up with him.
"I need to ask you a favor."
"What's the matter? You find another girl you couldn't handle?" Dayf snickered as they walked. Truth be told, he hoped the skinny red-head would leave him alone. His body ached from a long day at the stables, and he had little interested his fellow Candidate's request.
"Shut up," Tanlis snorted.
"I think I've found a solution to our problems."
"Problems?"
"A certain holdless problem. And his friend that you came here with."
"Jenackt?" Dayf blurted and turned to face the red-head.
"Shh!" Tanlis hissed. "Yes. Him and Xandris. They both need to go."
"Yeah, but the Weyrleader's taken a liking to the holdless wherry, and Xandris isn't leaving until after this Hatching."
"What if they didn't leave?"
Dayf blinked at him.
Tanlis shook his head.
"You know Hatchings are messy business. People fall and get hurt, get scratched up pretty bad. Some even die. I bet if that holdless twit was too mangled to be of use, they'd hand him over to Emerald Falls. They don't take in those who can't pull their weight, remember?"
Dayf narrowed his eyes at the Candidate and glanced around them. Everyone was gone. They were alone at dusk outside the runner pens. Of course they were. He glanced back at Tanlis.
"And what are we supposed to do with that?"
"I need you to push him." Tanlis said, staring at Dayf.
"Jenackt?"
"No, Xandris. That goldrider took her whore daughter with her, and there's no one else that would help Jenackt up at the Hatching. Everyone else thinks he's a menace. If you get your… buddy out of the way, Tiaz and I will take care of the rest."
"He's not my buddy," Dayf spat. "Hasn't been in a minute."
"But that doesn't mean I'm gonna shove someone down in front of a dragon. What if a hatchling dies and it's our fault? Did ya think that far?"
"No dragon's coming for them, Dayf."
"Ya don't know that."
Tanlis just stared at him, unblinking. Dayf balled a fist and stared back.
"Yer takin' it too far, Tanlis. Let it go."
"So you're really with them now?" The tall red-head narrowed his eyes.
"I ain't with nobody, but I'm not gonna kill someone either."
"And you're buddy from back him threw my brother up against the wall. That should be unnoticed? Unpunished?" Tanlis leaned forward toward him.
Dayf let out a long breath, holding back urge to sock the red-head in his pointy face. His body leaned back and he loosened his fist.
"Did he tell anyone about it?"
"So they can do what? Give him a slap on the wrist and keep him here?" Tanlis snorted, folding his arms in front of his chest.
"We're taking it into our own hands. It's what men do."
Dayf narrowed his eyes this time before he turned and spat again.
"Yer an idiot." He shook his head. "An' I want no part in it."
"Suit yourself," Tanlis growled straightening himself and dropping his arms.
"But Dayf.." he said as he turned past the Candidate and walked away. "This conversation never happened."
