Jenackt was jerked awake by the humming and he sat up, bleary eyed.
There was a sudden bustle around him and took him only a moment to
figure out what was going on: the Hatching. He scowled, ready to slump
back into bed when he finally noticed the hatching robe draped over
the end of his bed. His eyes widened and he burst into activity,
leaping out of bed and shucking his clothes off to slide the robe over
his head. It was his old one and was a little snug now around the
shoulders, but it would work. He ran a hand through his hair, slipped
on the sandals, and in short order was hustled with the rest of the
Candidates to the Hatching Grounds.
The heat was nearly oppressive, but as the Candidates fanned out, the
heat was forgotten in place of the steadily rocking eggs. The humming
around the cavern from the assembled dragons made his skin twitch with
anticipation as the first egg burst open. He held his breath as the
the brown appeared amidst the shells, but it veered away from his
direction and he felt his shoulders slump just slightly. He gave a
quick glance upwards, spotting N'vanik, then turned his gaze back to
the eggs that were now rapidly rocking. His hands curled into fists.
He saw Xandris, now X'dris he supposed, Impress and nodded slowly. He
was actually glad for him.
A blue, then another brown came out of their shells and then more
hatchlings. He craned his head, watching them. He had the sick feeling
that like before, he'd be left standing on the Sands. There was a
sudden shove at his legs and he caught himself before he toppled over.
He turned, looked down and then...it felt like stars burst into his
head as his gaze met with a whirling one.
}: Hey. I'm down _here_, not over there. :{ The hatchling lifted his
head to touch Jenackt's hand with a muzzle still slick from egg goop.
}: I am Zith. And _you_ are now Mine. :{
His legs buckled in shock, but there was no denying the awe that
overwhelmed him. The feeling that next surged through him was like
nothing he'd ever felt, a deep and unfettered love. It was as though
something clicked, then locked into place, a sense of rightness that
he hadn't even realized he'd been missing in all of his Turns. He
grabbed Zith's head in his hands and pressed his brow against the
bronze's, his shoulders shaking. He heard the yell from the Stands and
his lips parted in a broad smile as he felt the soft hide against his
own skin. He suddenly lifted his head and shouted in triumph, fists
lifted in the air in answer to N'vanik's own cry. **And you're mine!**
}: Well, yes. Of course. :{ Zith head butted him again, now more
urgent, but no small amount of affection. }: I am hungry. :{
**They have food waiting. ** Jenackt slowly rose and as his gaze swept
the Stands, they found the Lord Holder of Emerald Falls and his
Steward. His eyes narrowed and without pause, he lifted his hand to
make a rude gesture, his face proud . He'd never have to be frightened
of them again. He was free.
As he walked out of the Stands, he heard the commotion behind him, but
his mind was set only on his bronze, his Zith. N'vanik had been right.
It had really happened.
