Cyradis

As a Master Technician, Solis rated the ability to travel by dragonrider,
even if he didn't have his son for transport. That said, he still
preferred to let Lakiath bring him to his new Weyr, even if it might have
been more appropriate for a native rider.

Z'kai brought them out of /between/ very high above Dolphin Cove and took
a very slow descent and overflight, so he could see what he would be
dealing with. The Weyr was beautiful, with the volcanic half-circle
striking a contrast with the vividness of the ocean. He could see streams
running down to the sea that might be a source of hydroelectric, and
wondered about the potential for geothermal. He'd have to get another
aerial overview later, but already his mind saw possibilities.

They landed on the ground smoothly. Z'kai jumped down first with casual
ease and then helped Solis down. "Lakiath and I will wait. I'll meet you
in the Dining Cavern, and then we can get your things and you can tell me
everything they said." He tilted his head to listen to something, then
pointed along the wall. "That's where the Weyrwoman is."

Solis nodded and walked the designated direction. He eventually came to a
stop before a door and knocked on it. "Weyrwoman?"

"Ikalis. Can you see who that is?" She was feeling a bit tired today
so she didn't want the usual stream of visitors though she was willing
to see someone if there were a need.

Ikalis trotted to the door and opened it, looking up to see a tall
dark-skinned man she didn't recognize. He was wearing Master knots. "I'm
Ikalis, the Weyrwoman's assistant," she introduced herself. "Can I help
you?"

"My name is Master Solis, of the Technicians. I'm here about the Weyr
improvement project," he answered.

"One moment please." The assistant shut the door and then went back to the
Weyrwoman. "He's a Master Technician here to talk about the project," she
said, curiosity livening her tone.

"Ahh," Cyradis nodded. "I've been expecting the Master, I just didn't
realize he'd be here today. Go ahead and bring him in, then see if we
have some refreshments," she smiled. Ikalis had turned out to be
invaluable to her over the last few weeks.

"Yes, ma'am!" Ikalis scurried back to the door, took a deep breath, and
opened it. "Weyrwoman Cyradis says you're to come on in, and can I bring
you any refreshments?"

"Something cold, if you have it," he said.

He entered the room where the goldrider was and bowed before her.
"Weyrwoman, I'm Master Solis of the Techniciancraft," he said with a broad
smile.

Cyradis greeted the Master with a smile of her own but didn't bother
to try and rise. Her rather huge belly was proof of her condition so
she simply held her hand out to the Master. "A very great pleasure
Master Solis," she said in her throaty contralto.

"It's all mine," he said, shaking her hand. "When's the little one due?"

"Just a couple more weeks," she smiled. "But it feels like forever.
I'm sure you know how it is those last few weeks."

"I have five children," he confirmed.

"Then you know," she nodded. "This is my fifth," she smiled. Then
changing the subject she added. "I'm very glad the Technician craft
has sent you here to help us out."

"It's not every day you get to work on a large project for a Weyr, and
especially not one. I count myself a lucky man to get to have gotten to
work for two."

"Well this one could keep you busy for Turns," she smiled. "I'll
listen to anything and everything you'd like to suggest and we'll meet
with the Weyrleader on occasion if we have any issues with the
riders."

"Hopefully we won't. That said, we might be able to use their help if we
need to transport some large items, if that's acceptable."

"I'm sure it will be just fine," she nodded. "You'd be surprised at
what dragons can carry. But please also keep in mind that this is a
very warm weather weyr and there are times when the riders in the bowl
will be more... exposed than you might think appropriate for your
families. So if there are any issues at all please make sure both
N'vanik and I are aware."

He nodded seriously. "It seems like we've been assigned a number of
journeymen who have prior Weyr experience, and we're going to segregate
the two bathing pools in the crafter area for the families' sake. But it's
nice to work with leaders who are open to accommodating us, rather than
just saying "change to be like us"."

"Well," she tilted her head slightly. "I was Hall born myself," she
smiled. "So I understand the challenges."

"Which Hall?" he asked with a strong note of interest.

"Vintner Hall," she smiled at the obvious interest. "My father was a
Master Winemaker," she added with obvious pride.

"That's fantastic," he said. "No offense to the Weyr, or to Holds, but
I've always found the Craft life to be so good for young ones, gives them
a real look at how things go."

"It does," she smiled. "But then there was this gold egg..."
