New Tech Arriving

Writers: Avery, Miriah
Date Posted: 23rd September 2014

Characters: Solis, Kumore
Description: Solis greets the newest technician
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 8, day 14 of Turn 7

Kumore plopped her bag down in front of the door as she knocked.
Thankfully the ride from Vista Point hadn't taken long, but the time
difference was still a bit to get used to. "Master Solis?"

"Come on in," he said, looking up from his hidework to see who was visiting.

She picked up her bag and slung it over her shoulder, then stepped in
to the office. "Master Solis, I'm Kumore, Senior Journeyman
Technician. I was sent here from Vista Point to help you all out with
your system."

"Fantastic," he said, standing up to shake her hand. "Take a seat, tell me
about yourself. It's good to have someone else who's spent some time at a
Weyr, I've been worried about some of ours adjusting."

Kumore sat, leaned back and relaxed. "No need to worry about me adjusting.
I'm Weyrbred. Spent all my life in Weyrs. I'm twenty-nine turns and working
towards being a Master m'self, but when the call came about Dolphin Cove, I
could resist." Her lips curled up. "Skimpy swim wear and all."

He gave a hearty laugh at that. "Hopefully with the amount of work we'll
put into this, there'll be promotions to go around. Designing and
implementing something this big is certainly a Mastery-worthy project."

"I'm honestly not much of a designer, but I'll help where I can."
Kumore ran a hand through her short hair. "What do you think currently
needs the most attention?"

"We're going to have to develop generators in order to power the whole
space. What I'm concerned about is that the existing structures might not
support the new wiring, so we'll have to do some examinations of what's
a;ready here."

Kumore sat back and tugged at her ear in thought. "Well, is there a
major river near by that could possibly support a hyrdo generator? I
can have a look at whats been done with the current wiring and see if
it needs to be replaced. One tech in Vista that I worked with came up
with the idea to plaster over wires that had to be set over stone.
That way it looked better and the wires weren't exposed. Have they
done that here?"

"There are some smaller ones, but nothing large and impressive enough to
do the work alone. It might end up being a hybrid project." He knew that
Dolphin Cove had been reopened after an older weyr was damaged - it wasn't
their fault that it wasn't perfectly placed, but it did mean improvising.
"The plaster idea is marvelous, though."

"Hmm.. A hybrid system will take some engineering that is beyond my
capabilities. I'll just keep it up and running." Kumore offered a
slight smile. "But, I can start plastering the wiring that has already
been done."

"That would certainly be a help," he said. "I know we're getting a
small new wind generator in soon, to wire our quarters and labs."

"A new one? Good. Less immediate repairs." Kumore sat back, rubbing
her cheek a moment in thought. "Is there any thing that currently
needs to be repaired that you don't have enough people for?"

"Not that I know about, but I still need to do a full systems review," he
said.

"Starting where?" Kumore sat up with interest.

"Not sure yet," he admitted. "I was hoping to have an introductory meeting
with everyone in the next few days to get a plan drawn up."

She nodded. That was a good plan and she certainly didn't want to step
on the toes of the technicians who'd been here for longer than she
had. "Is there a living area set up for the technicians? I'll need to
unpack and get settled so I can start working."

"Yes, there is. We've taken over the area where the Harper Hall was
before they moved back. As it happens, there's segregated bathing
there to make family and those who aren't used to the Weyr more
comfortable. Some of the old practice rooms will be converted into
space for projects."

She waved a hand dismissively. "I'm not concerned about segregated
bathing. I'm used to Weyr bathing pools." And she liked them. There
was always so much to see and enjoy. "I'll unpack and get started
then."

"It was good to meet you, and I look forward to working with you soon."
