History
At the beginning of the Tenth Pass, discussions began that a new Healer Hall was needed -- though not one that focused mostly on treating the local population. This Hall, instead, would focus on teaching and the advancement of research techniques, building upon the information supplied from AIVAS. Unlike most Healer Halls, additional curriculum would be offered for those who wanted to specialize in caretaking instead of diagnostics and treatment, akin to the Terran version of nursing. With these goals in mind, the Amber Hills Lord Holder, Zathris, began petitioning for this Hall to be opened within his territory. Construction finally began in Turn 12, with the Hall opening in month 8.
Location
Situated on the northern side of the main Hold, snuggled against the river, this four-story building sits against the border with Amethyst Cliff Hold, thus providing critical healthcare to both major Holds. Like its sponsoring Hold, it falls under the protection of Dragonsfall Weyr, about 700 miles away, and shares the same climate range.
Building Information
Healer Hall consists of one main four-story building with a smattering of connected single-story side buildings for various agricultural functions. It has two main entrances that make a breezeway through the first level -- one entrance facing the main road back south to the Hold, and the other entrance facing the river.
The Hall emphasises that, while it is a teaching facility, it intends for its students to learn in a very hands-on manner. The ground level is all geared towards treating various incoming medical emergencies. There are twenty designated treatment rooms with two additional “trauma” rooms. The second floor is built with longer visits in mind, with thirty private rooms. There is a large lecture room on this floor as well. The third floor is mostly administrative offices and lecture rooms. There is a small kitchen on the second floor and a laboratory on the third. The fourth level is all underground, housing a morgue on one side and general cold storage on the other.
Adjoining structures are two large greenhouses for medicinal herbs, a dock with storage for deliveries, a dormitory for students, and housing for masters and staff. Amenities throughout are electricity for lights, a pulley lift system to move patients between floors, hot water diverted from the water mill and stored in nearby tanks, and private baths in the masters’ apartments.
Technology Level
While AIVAS provided great insight into this Craft, the technological level remains the same as the rest of Pern: no intensive or high-tech surgeries. The most common surgeries are amputations and C-sections. There is, however, greater knowledge about the causes of bacteria, viruses, and other ailments that can be treated by Healers. Vaccines can be created, given enough time and resources, but are not in wide use as most viral outbreaks have low mortality rates.
Common duties for apprentices tend to be transcribing older records, lectures and exams, observing journeymen and Masters with patients, and assisting with basic care needs under the watchful eye of other journeymen or Masters. Many apprentices will help in the greenhouse, the lab, or other areas of the facility so that they are getting a well-rounded education.
Common duties for journeymen are rounding on patients in the morning, discussing and documenting a treatment plan with other journeymen or Masters, riding out to various local emergencies, and assisting in the instruction of apprentices.
Female Policy
Healer Halls began accepting women into their ranks within the last few Turns, with its first students nearing readiness to advance into journeyman status by Turn 12. There is still a lot of contention about this change when it comes to the diagnostic track of Healing, but many hidebound Holds are fine with women as nurses.
Population and Plague Effects
At full capacity, there are about two hundred people at the Hall. Since it is an entirely new structure, it was not affected by the plague as other places were.
Economy
A majority of the Hall’s income comes from the sale of herbal remedies, tithes from the main Hold, and donations from grateful patients.
Transportation Information
Most visitors arrive to the Hall via the main road from the Hold towards the southwest, though access is also available via boat to the northern dock. It is about a 30 minute walk to the main Hold from the Hall.
