Physical Description of Persona:
Aleriand is a big dude. He's tall and sturdy, not muscular per se but strong. He is a man that one would expect to be working in and amongst machinery, but maybe not one that requires such delicate work as a printing press. His light brown skin tans darker in the summer months. His thick, wavy brown hair fluctuates between a neat cut and an unruly mop depending on when he's remembered to cut his hair, and he's starting to notice a few wisps of grey at his temples. His brown eyes need reading glasses now, which he helpfully keeps on a cord to avoid losing them. His voice is low, with the rumble of someone who's smoked and drank too much for too long.
Emotional Description of Persona:
The Printer Hall knows him as a protective, passionate man. He knows the ins and outs of the entire Hall infrastructure at this point, from the lumber received from Woodcraft all the way to the books being sold to the Holds and at the Gathers. He thoroughly lives and breathes the Printercraft and he is their strongest advocate, sometimes angrily so. He helps fix the printers, he approves the books for publishing, he keeps track of all the smaller printers and journeymen throughout the Southern Continent, and he still has time to argue with the Harpers about what is and isn't placed in their archives versus the Printerhall Library.
The apprentices whisper and call him a grump behind his back. He can be a curmudgeon. He's the first one to admit that he's not always nice. He has feelings and those feelings just slip out a lot more than they stay as inside thoughts. For all he supports his craft and the people that work it, he is hyper-independent and rarely asks for help himself.
While he seems content to be a bachelor for life, he periodically takes in his nieces and nephews in their preteen and teen years during apprenticeships at the Harper or Printer Halls. There is a non-zero amount of times where he's assured his siblings that he was helping to arrange a marriage for a niece but apprenticed her into a craft instead. He's the black sheep of his more conservative family and apprentices anyone that shows interest and aptitude, and he is more than happy to fight anyone that tries to tell him otherwise.
History of Persona:
Aleriand was born to a Harper family, through and through. His Father was a respected Master Harper in the South, and his grandparents were Harpers. All harpers, as far as the archives went (which, by all accounts, is not very far anymore). He likes to say that he grew up in Emerald Falls Hold, in the little cluster of buildings that was the southern Harper Hall, but in reality his family Journeyed with his father in his earliest turns, and it was only when his father accepted a Master position in the Hall did they move in permanently.
And Aleriand did his best to be a good harper, truly. He apprenticed when he came of age, and he did well enough in his classes. His love for books and records hinted at a life in the archives, and while his music was passable, he would never be a world-class tenor or harpist. But he sought a different calling-- and at fifteen he requested to transfer his apprenticeship to the Printerhall instead. It was a big fuss, as these things are, and he had to start from the beginning, at what felt like the other side of Pern, but in the end he was accepted to the Printerhall. It meant he walked the tables later than his peers and his Harper family members, but he made it.
He spent the next decade bouncing from post to post, supporting Harpers in their archives and maintaining the smaller printing presses across the South. Even did a short stint up north, before the cold, homesickness, and aging parents brought him back to the Harper Hall in Emerald Falls, where he focused on obtaining his Mastery.
The fire ravaged everything. He made it out with moderate burns on his hands and face, along with a single pile of books. Most of his family weren't at the Hall, but many of those who were made it out with minor injuries. The fire aggravated his father's illness and he died a few sevendays later.
He moved to Dolphin Cove Weyr with the rest of the Harper and Printer Halls and took to rebuilding with a single-minded zeal. He, along with a team of dedicated crafters, rebuilt the printing presses and the Hall's infrastructure. This was what ended up granting him his Mastery knots, and he orchestrated the return of the equipment and printers back to Emerald Falls Hold when the Harpers began to rebuild. As a strong advocate of both Halls, he was appointed 'Hallmaster' in Turn 8, though that title is mostly a formality.
