Persona Profile: Rhynnan

Writer: Duskdog

Name: Rhynnan
Pronunciation: RIN-ann
Age: 35
Birthday: m7 d17
Rank: Wingrider, Cypress Wing
Location: Barrier Lake Weyr
Craft: Dragonhealer
Craft Rank: Senior Journeyman

Physical Description of Persona:
Rhynnan is a petite woman, not even quite 5’, with a compact, well-toned frame built from years of physical activity. Her dark blonde hair is cropped short enough to tuck behind her ears, though a few rebellious strands never quite stay in place. Her hazel eyes appear a little different depending on the light and what she’s wearing, but they’re always lively and sharp with expression. She wears her broad, impish smile often -- a smile that can be equal parts charm and armor, and can shift easily from mischief to reassurance in an instant. Her movements tend to be quick and decisive, like someone who doesn’t waste time once she’s chosen a course, and she can sometimes appear restless, always fixing, fidgeting, or toying with something. Her hands are calloused and expressive, often punctuating her speech with small, vivid gestures, and she speaks with brisk warmth and a slight lilt from her trader upbringing.

Emotional Description of Persona:
Rhynnan is the kind of person who meets the world head-on: stubborn, ambitious, and unflinchingly determined once she’s set her sights on something. She has a strong sense of loyalty and responsibility, and is adaptable and pragmatic, with an ability to keep calm in a crisis that serves her well as a dragonhealer. She’s easy to get along with and naturally sociable without being attention-seeking; more a steady, grounding presence than the center of the crowd. Her humor is quick, wry, and often used as a tool -- to deflect tension, lighten others’ burdens, or quietly shield herself from her own.

Beneath the confidence and quips, Rhynnan carries a steady undercurrent of anxiety she rarely lets others see. She feels a deep responsibility for the wellbeing of those she loves, often taking on more emotional weight than she should. When things go wrong, she’s far quicker to blame herself than anyone else. Her kindness toward others contrasts sharply with the harsh expectations she keeps for herself.

She’s fiercely loyal to her weyrmate and their family, grounded in a love that has weathered time and trials. Her protectiveness can sometimes slip into overprotection -- she believes she has to stay strong for her loved ones, keeping her own pain tightly leashed so as not to trouble them.

History of Persona:
Rhynnan was born a trader, traveling with her family in their caravan during the Interval. When she was eight, the caravan was caught in a landslide, and Rhynnan was buried in the rubble, crushed in the darkness, scared and in pain. The first thing she saw when the rubble began to clear were the faces of brown Dalvoth and his rider, M'tharel, who had seen the signs of trouble while on sweep and called for other riders to come help them dig and rescue who they could.

The survivors were taken to River Bluff Weyr to recuperate. With most of her family gone, and those remaining deprived of everything they owned and their livelihood, no one left really had the resources to care for Rhynnan, and she was fostered by M'tharel and his weyrmate, who came to love her quickly as their own.

She never forgot the relief she felt at seeing Dalvoth's face, though, or the way the dragons had risked themselves to save her. It inspired her to go into dragonhealing once she was old enough, and to become a candidate, as well, with the clutches recently booming and the Weyrs in need of able-bodied candidates. Eventually she Impressed green Calixith and became a dragonrider, and then once weyrling training was over, was able to continue her studies as a dragonhealer, eventually earning her journeyman's knots.

Rhynnan reconnected with Myara, a former fellow candidate, several turns later. They had known each other for a long time -- Rhynnan had once even harbored a quiet crush when she was barely old enough to even know what a crush was -- but timing, as ever, is a fickle thing, and weyrlinghood and other concerns put Rhynnan’s love life on hold for a while. When they finally reconnected, the spark was immediate. They became partners and later weyrmates, building a family together that included Myara’s daughter and, eventually, three more children of their own. Both women became pregnant within months of each other, their children raised without distinction of who bore whom, celebrating their birthingday together as one shared beginning.

When the children were toddlers, disaster struck, as River Bluff Weyr was hit by an earthquake. Their son, Rhyvar, was caught in part of the collapse in an ironic mirror of his mother's own childhood trauma. He survived, but with lasting injuries to his legs and pelvis that now require him to walk with braces and crutches, and he will likely never regain full mobility. Rhynnan’s fierce protectiveness deepened into something almost desperate; she became determined never to let her family suffer unguarded again. Like the other River Bluff refugees, the family was forced to move elsewhere, but when Barrier Lake was established, they were among the first to go, hoping for a fresh start in a brand new home.

Dragon's Name: Calixith
Dragon's Age: 21
Dragon's Hatching Date: m2 d24
Dragon's Colour: Green
Next Mating Flight: m5 d11 of turn 13
Description of Dragon:
Calixith is average-length for a green, though sleek and long-limbed, built for agility and sudden bursts of speed rather than endurance. Her hide is a rich mossy green -- not grey-brown-green like swamp-moss, but rather the bright, soft moss of a hardwood forest where the light breaks through the treetops in golden spears -- with subtle undertones of that green-gold in her wingsails. Her body carries a wiry grace, the same taut energy that Rhynnan herself has, as if neither of them quite learned the meaning of stillness, but know where they’re going, nonetheless. She tends to move with purpose: quick, efficient, and with a feline balance that makes her seem to flow from one motion to the next.

When she’s relaxed -- which is rare -- Calixith has a habit of curling her tail around herself tightly and tucking her head in until only a glint of emerald eye remains. Her voice, when she speaks mind-to-mind, is low and fluid, carrying a tone of dry amusement even when she’s being serious.

Calixith is confident without being overbearing, keenly aware of her surroundings and of herself. She’s a dragon who likes to watch first, act second -- not out of caution, but because she finds understanding others fascinating. She has an instinctive empathy that mirrors her rider’s, and she often acts as the emotional barometer of their pair, grounding Rhynnan when her thoughts spiral too far inward. Calixith is patient where Rhynnan is restless, deliberate where Rhynnan is impulsive, though she has her own kind of stubborn pride.

Her humor runs subtler than her rider’s, but it’s there -- dry, teasing, and fondly exasperated when Rhynnan forgets to rest or take care of herself. Calixith doesn’t tolerate self-pity and can be blunt about it, though her bluntness is rooted in care. She loves the feel of wind and open space, the rhythm of flight, and she takes genuine pleasure in small things: sun-warmed stone, a good meal, the quiet hum of dragons around her.
