Persona Profile: Ty'dis

Writer: Draconafin

Name: Ty'dis
Pronunciation: TAy'dis
Age: 35
Birthday: m5 d5
Birthplace: Dragonsfall Weyr
Rank: Wingrider, Valley Wing
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Job: Temp Retired

Physical Description of Persona:
Height 6'6"
Weight 218

Ty’dis is lean and tall; apparently ever reaching skywards. With shoulder blades that are naturally board and solid -- clearly unswayable; making him appear to be literally built like a tree at the best of times. So much so one might believe it is the sole reason behind the nickname ‘tree’ given to him by at least one of his fellow riders. Others might insight the fact that he was always lanky and stick like for a child. Growing like a weed, straight up until his Weyrmlinghood. Having been born in the cooler climate of Dragonsfalls his skin tone is very much what the old timers of yester-turn would have called Caucasian.

As a rider his body is toned and well defined, with those board shoulders and upper back tapering carefully together. The former hides any unnatural contours in his form; such as the scoring of his left shoulder. As any clothing not cinched in with straps would hang straight down without shaping over the damaged joint. Especially when it comes to fur-lined riding leathers as they don’t sink into the slight loss of left trapezius muscle. His proportions match with themselves, so even though his height noticeably on the higher end. He doesn’t seem gaunt, or gangly on the exterior. A life of hard labour and physical demands, both before and after Impression; caused him to maintain a peak fitness wherever possible. This is the place he has fought hard to be back in after getting scored early into his 34th turn.

His jaw his thick and chiselled, while his cheek bones might appear to be high for a male. This is because they were formally well fleshed out, with some residual fat/thickening. That would have made it look like the rider had something more a baby face and features. Until they hollowed out some in his later years. Giving the rider’s face a slightly haggard, although aged like fine wine appearance. Those higher cheekbones now giving most of his gazes a somewhat more intense gravity. By preference his dark brown hair is kept short -- even shaved about his neck and temples. It has a dark chestnut hue; with more an ochre showing through as it grows out into a finger-length on top. All sections of his hair have gotten longer during his recent grounding and could be called cropped short, rather than shaved at current. With some of the cresting finger lengths long enough to reach his temples on their own. If left completely alone it would have an unruly thick wave to its form, some of which can be seen as the longer strands continue to gain length.

The sharper lines of his face are set off with dark golden-brown eyes. Some might see the tone as almost predatory, like that of an eagle. Others have reported the golden hue contained within softens the look with a light of hope or optimism. That said at the best of times the rider is known for having something of a straight or commanding presence with look of a man beyond his turns.

The score:

Both Ty’dis and healers are not entirely certain what form of Thread the rider took to his shoulder. This is due to the tangled mess that was left behind. Best guesses assume it was either a clump or several strands. There is also speculation that the form in question was also partially burned at the time due to the uneven edges. Hardest hit is the rider’s left trapezius muscle, which seems to be where the Thread first hit him, coming dangerously close to puncturing his neck at the time. The removal of some of the trapezius remains to this day. Giving his left shoulder a slight dropped appearance when viewed, unclothed, in comparison to his right. Several lighter, lightning style burn marks run half way down the rider’s pectorals, reaching over his clavicle and towards the sternum. This cascading effect is also seen to wrap around and down his deltoid; although the edges here are less clear and look more like a flame burn that a threadscore at first.

Damage from the strike is most prevalent on the rider’s back -- although contained to his left side. As it reaches down in a consuming form, like fire burns; while having the patterning of lightning burns. In total it extends from trapezius over the lats and down the other dorsi muscles. Deepest just below the scapula; and tapering out in the small of his back. Some of the scars even wrap deeply into the rider’s side, touching several of the sub-scapular and intercostal muscles. The long term restrictions caused by scar tissue present as a rotator cuff injury and are managed as such. With strengthening and conditioning exercises being a daily inclusion in Ty’dis routine. His riding gear has also be modified on the left side. Meaning when certain straps are tightened it acts as a shoulder sling and takes the pressure off, should he have a need to modify his load to avoid a flare up. Such flares result in stabbing pains that run down either the trapezius, scapular, or deltoid. Over the Turn he was grounded the bronzerider has become very aware of his limitations and will often act in advance of them becoming a problem. For example, choosing to strap his shoulder when it starts catching so he can keep working, before letting it get to a point where he can’t lift it any more.

Emotional Description of Persona:
On the surface Ty’dis can be said to be somewhat reserved. Possessive of what many might consider an enigmatic personality; keeping his personal life as just that; personal. Well as much as one is able to in a Weyr. He is considered to be naturally withdrawn from other people; and not known for starting friendships. Rather he is known for being dragged into them, being something of a natural loner. Making close friends something of a treasured rarity for him. Even if some of them might be more of a headache than he bargained for. When it comes to conversations Ty’dis known to stand on ceremony; using ranks over names until he is corrected or comfortable. He chooses distance until he gets to know someone on their terms, despite being very good at reading people quickly. Although even once a friendship is established he is not known for letting people in when something bothering him, forcing many to read between the lines for his honesty.

However having said that, he is known to make rapid fast decisions without thinking. This is usually because he had planned in advance for any number possible outcomes and knows the best call for a situation. It is this meticulous preparation, as well as a collected calm that have made him well respected among his past wingriders. This also opened the pathway to many of the friendships and acquaintances that the bronzerider has, putting him at ease among his fellow riders. Enabling him to be a team player completely. Some have compared watching Ty’dis to watching a Chess Master at work, a man who knows every possible move and can counter it without even thinking about it. Always willing to hear people out Ty’dis has also been described by some as a father figure. In fact he has a natural internal strength and confidence that seems to radiate outwards to those around him. He remains steadfast and loyal to those that know him best.

Perhaps his greatest downfall is his ability to see the good in everyone. Regardless of how small and deep it might be. When it comes to weighting people’s merits and flaws he often weighs the former higher and consequently gives many the benefit of the doubt.

Intelligence, perception and a dislike of sitting around doing nothing drove Ty’dis to study. An insatiable need to prove his worth, even Pre-Impression; stuck as he constantly seems to be trying to out run his past. Becoming something of a work-a-holic Ty’dis channelled this into learning and mastering all he could about being a rider. Patterns, formations and quick adaption of them came from initially from passion. Turns as a Wingleader saw him with the chance to act on these insights in such a natural way that it could have been gut instinct. Constantly pushing himself without need for approval, while drawing out the best in his riders. Outwardly the rider always remained confident, calm and commanding. Able to stay cool and collected, even in the high stress of Falls. Putting the needs of his riders first to make the best use of their skills.

Being scored rattled him during the worst parts of his recovery. It brought with it a tendency for the rider to guard his internal feelings more closely. An outwardly brooding nature occasionally making itself known. Even as he strove to remain honest and open with those on his journey to come back from the incident. He carries himself now with added the weight of knowing it could have just as easily been a rider under his care. Frustration often sits never far from the surface due to the forced inactivity. Refusing to remain stagnant the rider has forced himself to see the scars as reminders. Obstacles that can be overcome; digging deep for the persistence needed to do so.

History of Persona:
Ty’dis is a known born and raised Dragonsfall Native, for the most part. He was born Tayvedis (Tay’ved’dis); often called Tay for short. His father was a traveling trader and his mother a local hold resident. The two had been swept up during a gather and a rising flight that followed the events. Neither were considered welcome at the hold once the revelation of a child was made. Rather they ended up managing to settle for life at the former Weyrhold in the interim. Mostly as a way to see how and where the dust settled before making their own choices after the fact. Oddly it was his father’s connections from traveling through the South over the Turns that set things up for his son. For the most part it was a network of fosters that raised Ty’dis. His mother choosing to try and make her way back to hold life and his father continuing to travel. Thus he knows neither well, but was through and through a Weyrbrat by his own right; even before Dragonsfall became a Weyr proper.

Consequently being considered a member of Dragonsfall from his very beginnings Ty’dis did all the typical Weyrbrat things. From being caught trying to catch an early glimpse of the eggs; to being asked to strand when he turned 12. Growing up in the shadow of dragons had taught him great love and respect for the beasts, although he never considered the path his life would take, with or without them. Pre-impression life saw him take no strong direction from the various crafters living in and around the area. Rather the young boy was content to be a help to everyone, in whatever ways he could. Very much becoming and embodiment of the old timer saying of ‘Jack of all Trades, Master of None’.

If anything he enjoyed working with his hands, but seemed to shine most when he got to work things out with his mind. Trying to view all problems from all angles for a better understanding.

At age 16 Ty’dis bonded to Kaytath. Although he didn’t seem to get the memo about the gravity of Impressing a bronze at first glance. There was nothing remarkable about a bronze dragon hatching halfway through the clutch and walking over to a boy who had been standing on and off for the last 4 Turns. Ty’dis might not have expected it, but Kaytath knew he would be there and that was all that mattered. The pair of them simply was.

Weyrlinghood saw Ty’dis thrown from being a helpful outsider to being a helpful insider. One with something to prove constantly digging at his core. It was as if he woke up to understanding that he had been chosen by a bronze and that literally meant the sky was the limit and he had to some catching up to do.

Ty’dis was in his early 20s when the return of thread was announced. He remembers clearly the thread scored hide of the greenrider that had scouted ahead. Also burned into his memory was his own first flight against the menace, when firestone and ash scents took on a far more terrifying meaning. Here his drive to prove himself dug in harder and it became a need to protect those around him. He was drawn to what records existed and thus into learning everything he could to prepare himself, his dragon and any lucky enough to his friends for the Turns that would come.

In time Ty’dis was made a Wingleader. Again not something he openly expected; despite working towards it unwittingly. Regardless of what he had or hadn’t expected he took to the role naturally. Proceeding to try and bring out the best of his riders, whenever the opportunity presented itself. He worked closely with other Wingleaders and Weyrleaders in his time; always willing to hear others out, seeking the best in everyone. He held the position to some degree for several Turns. During this time he became acquainted with one of his Wingriders; Az’uka, and the two hit off an unlikely friendship. With Az’uka doing a lot of charging head first into things. This friendship is often best referred to as the dynamic between a Leader and his Harper. With Az’uka taking on the latter role without the craft training; always questioning, judging and grounding the bronzerider.

The score:

Half way though Turn 12 saw Ty’ids’s world quite literally flipped on its head. He was badly scored during a Fall; (Triad history makes this Fall: DFW m6, d17, T12). A cross over change was called incorrectly, resulting in chaos briefly between the Wings. Ty’dis was scored dominantly on his left side; front and back. Although the damage is far more visible on the latter as it reaches down to the rider’s waist. The chest side reaches down over his pectorals. At the time this was considered a higher concern, as the rider also managed to crack several ribs on his left when caught in the chaos.

Nothing about the healing journey was easy; from the wound’s size, shape and progression. Infection even struck at different points, resulting in the wound having to be surgically debrided at least twice that the bronzerider remembers. The use of Fellis was also limited even as the wound lingered to stop any would be addiction arising. Consequently Ty’dis has become something of an expert when it comes to the tea brewed alternatives and has even developed a taste for tea over Klah. But will drink both.

Recovering as much use as possible of his shoulder and surrounding areas has been the rider’s focus for the last Turn. With the prolonged recovery he has gained the acquaintance of many Healers across the Triad cluster of Weyrs. Both Masters and students alike. Ty’dis has always seen knowledge as power and while he dislikes the wound for grounding him; it has proven a useful teaching aid. So hopefully no one else has to go through the same issues. Which has driven him to openly explain the journey open to anyone who asks. Some also joke he must be something of a case study for the Teaching Healer Hall stationed at Amber Hills.

The first 8ish months he was weyrbound with fevers and infections. When the last of which cleared he was tentatively put on to various physically strengthening exercises in the hopes of becoming strong enough to fight Thread again.

At this time he is about 4-5 months into physical rehabilitation and looking for new challenges which promise to take him away from Dragonsfall. As he looks for ways to bridge the gap between day to day strengths and the actual Load of Fighting Fall.

After the move to DCW

3-4 months of Wing drills will bring a flare up as his body adapts to the change in load and the demands that places on him. This includes the possibility of fighting half Falls with the Queens Wing.

2-3 months of fighting Full Falls would see him promoted out of the Queens Wing and to wherever his new Weyrleader would have use for him

Dragon's Name: Kaytath
Dragon's Age: 19
Dragon's Hatching Date: m11 d8
Dragon's Hatching Place: Dragonsfall Weyr
Dragon's Colour: Bronze
Description of Dragon:
For a Bronze Kaytath is notably on the larger end, known to give Queens a run for their marks in size alone. His form is lithe with a thick breastbone and heavily anchored, colossal wings. He is something of a classic bronze when it comes to his colouration. While his hide is uniform, and without scoring. His shadows boarder on Antique Bronze, and in the sun he has an almost yellow/gold tone to his brightest points.

Where Ty’dis is the Tree, Kaytath is the rock. Strong, confident and dependable. He a steady presence to his rider at all times and has been known to extend this to other dragons in close proximity with his rider. His loyalty and calm have remained unshaken, even in recent Turns.
