Persona Profile: Firyali

Name: Firyali
Age: 36
Birthday: m5 d28
Rank: Senior Journeyman Printer
Location: Harper Hall, Emerald Falls Hold
Craft: Printer
Craft Rank: Senior Journeyman
Speciality: Typesetter

Physical Description of Persona:
A tall woman, standing nearly six feet, Firyali's appearance is definitely striking. Her black hair is thick and coarse, and seems to absorb more light than it reflects. Creamy dark brown skin covers her body, her eyes which are a predominantly green hazel, a startling contrast against her skin. Her complexion is still good, despite the amount of time she spends in the sun, although fine lines have appeared near her eyes and mouth. Firyali's features are strong, with a narrow, long nose and slightly slanted eyes, along with a full lower lip.

She has a feminine build with curves where they should be, but Firyali is definitely built on sturdier lines than most women. Her bones are simply heavier than most and also the cause for her weight, which hovers around 200 pounds. She carries that weight well, with confident posture and demeanor.

Emotional Description of Persona:
Firyali tends to be quiet in her roles at the Harper Hall, only speaking up when she has a well-thought, rationalized comment to put in. Also, she tends to take the jobs that no one else wants, completing them efficiently without complaint. While it's been hinted that a leadership position might be available if she wants it, Firyali prefers being the power behind the scenes rather than a leader herself.

Outside of her position however, she is open, friendly, and sometimes downright silly for a woman of her age. Her sense of humor tends toward the quirky, mischievous child she was, which Firyali claims is for her own protection: life is stressful enough without being a stick in the mud when she's off-duty. She's made it a personal quest not to be unapproachable like many others she has come across since she first apprenticed. She can be a pessimist and moody, but it's rare, and usually set off by someone forcing her to look a little too closely at herself, since there are points to her personality that she really doesn't like.

For the most part, Firyali spends her time with a group of close friends, rather than socializing with anyone and everyone, although anyone who wishes can usually join in on their fun. Her few lovers have nearly always come from that group, rather than some random person who took it upon themselves to be attracted to her. One of her main requirements for a lasting relationship is for someone who will simply listen to her without judgment, and she has found that in most cases only those who already know her well will give her that courtesy. The others tend to think that she's childish or just strange, not realizing her philosophy on being too serious about herself.

History of Persona:
Firyali was born on a small island off the coast of Topaz Sea Hold's territory. She was the oldest of a whole passel of children, and the ringleader in most of their escapades. As she grew, she was somewhat of a disappointment, as she had absolutely no talent for farmwork or fishing although she was constantly into other things. As turns went by, she grew more and more unsettled at home. Not really unhappy, but she had itchy feet, wanting to see more than her parents' scrap of Pern. Her mother noticed the girl's unhappiness though, and sat Firyali down for a long talk before she had a chance to do anything rash.

Shortly afterward, her parents announced they had arranged an apprenticeship for Firyali and her oldest brother. The Printer Hall was hardly Firyali's first choice for a craft to apprentice to, but it was better than her situation at home at any rate. Her turns with the Printers flew by, and she walked the tables to Junior Journeywoman at eighteen with a specialty in typesetting and press-work. She was also assigned to spend considerable time with the junior apprentices, when her masters discovered that she had a knack for working with the younger Printers.

Just before Firyali's 22nd birthingday in 1202, the Hallmaster sent her and another journeyman on assignment to Dolphin Cove Weyr at Lord Jaryd's request. She quickly learned a lot about the differences between Hold and Weyrlife, and that she much preferred Dolphin Cove over Topaz. Thankfully, she was allowed to continue on at Dolphin Cove once it was confirmed that Thread had returned.

It was only when Topaz was destroyed by storms that Firyali returned to the Hall, to help with the cleanup. Returning to Topaz was extremely difficult for her, since not only did she have to readjust to life in a Hold, but the realizing that much of her family was gone as well. The Printer made the best of the serious situation by being as practical and helpful as possible, spending much of her time with the remaining Junior Apprentices and organizing them to help the older staff pack and haul their equipment. When the Harper Hall was destroyed by fire, she couldn't help but wonder if there was some reason these disasters kept following the Printer Hall, until their new location was announced.

While Firyali knows what happened was devastating to the Hold and Halls, she can't help but feel that it was the best solution for her personally, allowing her to continue her duties at the Hall but still be home at Dolphin Cove.
