Description: Progress on the project.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 1, day 13 of Turn 8
Cyradis smiled as she came into the council room from the direction of
her weyr. "Good morning," she said in greeting and went to the
sideboard for a cup of klah and a small pastry.
Taine had got to his feet as the Weyrwoman entered. "Good morning,
Weyrwoman. I can recommend the pastries with the yellow filling." Was
it a custard? He wasn't sure but he didn't feel the need to know,
other than being able top recognise his favourites amongst a
selection.
With her cup freshly filled and a small plate with one of the
recommended pastries in hand she moved to her seat at the table and
sat down. Their update meetings were normally short but the technician
had requested extra time today so to her that meant he had more to
tell then just the usual boring report of the progress of the wiring.
"Sorry I am late." Chaysea said as she sailed into the meeting room,
her ring of keys jingling at her waist. In her left hand the Headwoman
carried her usual clipboard for note taking and in her other she had
the cup of klah that she'd swiped from her desk.
Knowing Master Solis would be along any moment Cyradis sipped at her
klah. "These are very good Chaysea," she said pointing at the pastry
on her plate.
"Especially the ones with the yellow filling," Taine said. "But there
might not be many of those left."
"Oh I know," Chaysea assured Taine, "I had the recipe passed to me
from the Dolphin Hall Headwoman. They're called citrus clouds, I
believe." She smiled as she took a seat beside of the crafter.
"Perhaps some of my Citroncello would give the filling a little bite
for receptions and such," she winked at Chaysea. "Do I need to step up
production?"
"That sounds like the perfect dessert combination for a girls'
night.... Meaning I would step up production if I were you." The
Headwoman grinned.
"Girl's night?" the master mason protested. "How can that be fair?"
Cyradis chuckled. "Life isn't fair Master Taine, or didn't your
harpers ever tell you that?"
"I didn't think they were talking about pastries," the master mason
grumbled, trying not to smile.
Shaking her head Cyradis couldn't help but appreciate the Master
mason's quip. So many crafters were too serious by half. It was
refreshing to see one who could be lighthearted. "Well we should
probably get started, I know Master Solis will be along in a moment.
He'd told me he has a rather important milestone that you're ready to
install?"
"I couldn't steal his thunder," Taine protested, though he doubted it
was much of a secret. Nothing was at the Weyr, and he doubted much
was missed by this Weyrwoman. "But, yes, noticeable things are
starting to happen. Er - more noticeable than hammering and
chiselling and digging and disruption. Good and useful things."
"Sorry I'm late. I wanted to do one last check of the prototype,"
Solis said apologetically as he came in the door and took the last
seat available. "It's been stable for a sevenday and we're ready to
move on with the construction. Which unfortunately is going to mean
some major disruption to your sphere of affairs," he added, inclining
his head at the Headwoman.
"_Major_ disruption," Taine murmured with a laugh. "Always a good sign."
Chaysea's lips twisted, "Just what sort of disruptions should I be
expecting?"
"Two major projects are currently in the works. One is the refrigeration
project for one of the smaller storage caves for food will need to be
completely cleared out so we can install equipment. When it's set up,
you'll be able to keep foods cold longer. The other is setting up the
cooling fans that will let you work longer into the hot period. That will
require shifting over to only one side of the kitchen for a bit so we can
be running wires and putting fans on the ceiling."
"I can already hear the cooks complaining, but they'll be grateful for
it in the end." Chaysea jotted down the info. "About how long do you
think this will take?"
"Adding the lights and fans to the kitchens...say two-ish days per
side, for a total of five or so," Solis said promptly. "If the kitchen
could be cleared out entirely we could do it in three, but that means
you'd have to prepare food in the weyrbowl or elsewhere. The
refrigeration setup would be closer to 10 days."
"Sounds like a fair bit of disruption but the end result will be worth
it." She looked at Chaysea, "What do you think? Do you want to cook in
the Werybowl for three days or only half the kitchen for longer?" She
knew they had deeper storage caverns they could move the contents of
the Storage room it would just be a longer walk to get it.
"I like the idea of cooking out in the Weyrbowl, that way we won't
have to worry about being in each other's way while the upgrades are
taking place." Even though it would certainly be a challenging
preparing the meals outside, Chaysea had no doubt that her staff could
handle it.
"I can have simple fire pits built," Taine offered. "Since I don't
suppose you'll move the ovens out for just a few days. Could leave
them there and use them for evening events later."
"That sounds like a good idea to me. We'd work round the clock," Solis promised.
Cyradis nodded between the crafters and her Headwoman. "We could even
make a party of it, you know how the riders like a bonfire on the
beach," she smiled.
"Not only the riders," Taine pointed out, thinking that evenings spent
outside were one of the pleasant differences between life at
Dragonsfall and at Dolphin Cove.
"That's a good point." The Technician considered timing. He knew
they'd want it done soon.
"What if we tackle the refrigeration of the cavern the last sevenday
of this month? That gives a sevenday to clear out that cavern so we
can work. Then we can do the kitchen cooling in month 2, since we'll
have to do some preparing to do all the cooking outside and it should
be announced to the weyrfolk."
"Works for the masons," Taine agreed.
"Alright then," Cyradis smiled around the table. "Why don't you two
work out the logistics and work with Chaysea to set the right
schedule. "I'll talk to the starsmiths to see if we can get a weather
forecast for the early weeks of month two. Anything anyone would like
to add?"
Solis shook his head. Getting the approval of the Weyrwoman and
figuring out the timing had been his major goal for the day. "I'm
good, ma'am."
Chaysea shook her head, jotting down the last bit of notes on their
meeting before tucking her clipboard beneath her arm, "Nothing from
me."
Cyradis nodded and closed up her notes with a smile. "I'll thank you
all in advance for all your hard work then." She rose from her seat
and swept out of the room.
