The complaining had become incessant and Cyradis finally snapped at
Panitath. **I can't bring the lake to _you_ so if you must have a bath
you will have to go to the lake.**

}:I can't leave my eggs, they might be stolen.:{ Panitath grumbled.

**Really,** Cyradis said as she headed toward the lake with her bucket
of tools. **Who exactly do you think is brave enough to get past
Loseth while you get your bath?**

More grumbling filled the cavern before the big gold finally emerged
after admonishing her mate to be a very careful guardian of their
clutch.

Cyradis shook her head and rolled her eyes. "Can you move any slower,"
she called out. Then rounded on a couple of candidates who were
chuckling nearby. "I supposed _you_ could handle her better?"

"No, ma'am," Ristaliys answered. Her tone reminded him of his mother,
so his response had been automatic. He looked up at the big dragon
with awe. After two turns at two different Weyrs, dragons were still
amazing to him. He turned his attention back to the very tiny
Weyrwoman, his chuckling friend all but forgotten. His imagination put
her on top of the big dragon and the image made him smile a little.
"Where. . . Where are you two headed, ma'am?"

His tone mollified her somewhat so she half smiled. "Hopefully to the
lake to bathe her. She's been complaining of an itch on her back for
two weeks."

Dragonriders always talked about itching dragons. He had wondered when
he first came to River Bluff Weyr why dragons itched so much. He had
posed the question to a nice greenrider, and she had explained that a
dragon was so itchy because they had claws instead of hands, and
couldn't scratch themselves without hurting themselves. Ristaliys'
smile grew a little at the memory.

An idea popped into his head, so he blurted out, "Do you want some
help?" As soon as he asked, he blushed a little. After all, he was
talking to the Weyrwoman! She wasn't just some woman. She was the
woman. "I don't mean you couldn't do it yourself, ma'am, but. .. if
she's like any of the other golds I've been around, when they have
clutches on the ground, all they want to do is be around them. So the
more hands that wash her, the faster it'll get done, right?"

Her eyes flicked to his knots. "Good thinking," Cyradis smiled at the
candidate. "Walk with me," she said and then politely introduced
herself. "I'm Cyradis," she said. "I know you've been here for a bit
but I don't think we've actually met."

"I know we haven't," he answered as they started walking together. "I
would remember meeting you. The Weyrwoman, I mean." He looked down at
her, making sure to keep his eyes on hers. One of the bad (or was it
good?) things about being so tall was that women weren't as tall as he
was. He usually had to keep his eyes on theirs, otherwise, he'd be
staring down their shirts. "I'm Ristaliys. I got here about a turn
ago. Just after River Bluff and the. . ." he trailed off. Everyone
knew about that place. He took a moment to think about those that were
gone, then started speaking again. "What's it like?"

She nodded her head in understanding. "I'm so sorry for your loss,"
she said as she had so many times before. She smiled at his question.
"Oh so much more than you'd ever expect," she said. "At first they're
a big baby who's an endless pit of hunger and demands. After a while,
you can't remember what it was like before they came. Your best
friend; closer than your lovers or sometimes even your children." Then
they were finally at the lake and Panitath had walked in to submerge
herself up to her eyes.

Ristaliys chuckled when he saw the dragon. "She must really have
wanted that bath," he said as he sat down and started pulling off his
boots. He didn't mind getting his pants wet, but he hated having wet
boots. With feet as big as his, it was annoying getting more made.
When he was done, he pulled off his shirt and tossed it on top of the
boots. "Ready when you are," he told Cyradis.

She chuckled. Already barefoot, she shed her coverup and tossed it
onto the rocks. In shorts and a top she walked toward the lake. "See
how much better that is that me bringing buckets of water to the
Sands?"

Panitath's only answer was bubbles from her nose before she rose out
of the water and headed back toward the beach.
