Description: Dolphineers attend the Hatching Feast.
Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr, Dolphin Hall
Date: month 10, day 15 of Turn 12
Notes: Mentioned: Tolna
Serisa settled on her bed after dinner, opening her dolphin first aid notes in preparation for the next day’s class. Tolnira was spending time with family, so she was planning on a quiet evening in. Only 10 days had passed since arriving at the Hall and everything still felt new and slightly strange.
“Anyone up for a field trip?” Chalzie asked, stepping into the dormitory.
Serisa looked up, confused. Who went on a field trip at night?
“There was a Hatching at the Weyr earlier and the feast is tonight,” Chalzie said. “I got permission to take whoever wants to come. The Master of Apprentices made me promise to have you all back by curfew, but that gives us a few candlemarks. So, who wants to come?”
Noreia considered this quietly for a long moment. The Weyr was a very noisy place. Crowded. And who knew who would flirt with her. It could be awkward. Uncomfortable.
“I’ll go,” Oriene instantly said. Mostly because it was Chalzie asking. But also, it meant that she could see some of her friends. She ignored the niggling thought that what if _this_ Hatching had been the one that had her dragon because she didn’t want to fall into that trap but it was hard. Maybe if she spent the evening dancing, she wouldn’t care.
Cidra thought of the nice dress she had tucked away in her home. She would finally have an excuse to wear it and see a Weyr for the first time.
“I’ll go,” she told Chalzie.
“Me too,” Serisa said, not wanting to be left out and excited to finally see the Weyr.
“Ok,” Chalzie said with a nod. “Get ready and I’ll meet everyone who wants to come out front in a quarter candlemark.”
"
Chalzie stopped a few minutes from the Weyr. “Look, I’m not your mother and I’m not going to report anything you do for fun in the next few candlemarks. However, it is my job to make sure we’re all back by curfew. Otherwise, we probably won’t be able to do this again. So, please don’t stray too far, and make sure at least one other person knows where you are. I’ll try to keep a general eye on things but, again, I’m not your mother. Got it?”
"
The climate inside Dolphin Cove’s Dining Cavern was unlike anything Cidra had ever experienced. It was _somewhat_ like the wedding feasts back at Ivory Bay, but even more ramped up. And some of the things the people wore were _scandalous_. She’d caught enough bare chests and side-boobs in one night to last her an entire lifetime.
“You actually _lived_ here?” Cidra asked, looking at Oriene as if she’d had temporary insanity.
Oriene was grinning. “For a few Turns, yes. I know it’s pretty different than some other places but I grew up at Dolphin Hall so I was used to seeing people in swimsuits. The noise of the dragons took some getting used to.”
Cidra didn’t mind a swimsuit, they served a purpose, but what purpose was there to be half naked in the middle of the Dining Cavern of all places? **Here, enjoy a meatroll and a side of this guy’s armpit hair,** she thought, concealing a gag behind her hand.
Luck had a stranglehold around her neck as Noreia took in the sights. She agreed with Cidra that it was overwhelmingly different from the Hall. The lack of clothing didn’t bother Noreia as much, just the noise. “That is a pretty color dress,” she remarked, nodding her head towards a woman wrapped in royal blue and white.
“Ooh, that is nice,” Serisa agreed, wondering if she would ever own something so nice. “Do you think any of the weyrfolk would like to dance normally and not, you know, scandalously?”
“Looks like you’re about to find out,” Cidra said under her breath to Serisa as a young man approached, a dragonrider by his shoulder knots.
“Hey Oriene,” the shy but steady voice of R’vkal said. He had seen her across the Hall with some new faces. Some of them were cute. Not that he could think of romance right now, not with Indrath still little. Well, big. Big little. But he could introduce himself, right? And say hello to Oriene.
“Hey Ryvankal! Oops, R’vkal, sorry,” she answered. “Meet me fellow apprentices, Cidra and Noreia. This is R’vkal. He’s a weyrling.”
R’vkal ducked his head politely. “Pleased to meet you.”
Serisa covered her mouth to hide the giggle that escaped. Here was an actual dragonrider. She couldn’t believe they were actually at the Weyr. A series of gasps drew her attention to the dancefloor, where two men were dancing in a way she had never even seen a man and a woman dance before. She nudged the apprentice next to her and pointed.
Cidra scowled at being nudged, but then looked in the direction Serisa pointed and shrugged. “Whatever,” she muttered. Did these people understand how _tacky_ they were dressed? The Dolphin Cove dragonriders certainly lacked an eye for fashion.
Serisa only half listened to Cidra’s response, her jaw dropping as one of the men touched the other’s backside with a hand, and then with both hands. She looked around, trying to understand if only the holders were shocked.
Cidra, for one, wasn’t shocked by much of what she saw. She’d always heard the Weyr was a place of lewdness, and Dolphin Cove was living up to every horrible thing she had ever imagined.
