“OH!” Lestondric rushed up with excitement and stopped mere inches from P’xan. He bounced on the balls of his feet. “Hi! Can I help you wash-- I mean, I'm supposed to help you wash your dragon, hi, I'm Lestondric. I know how, I've washed a dragon. A bunch of dragons! A big dragon!”
“... Hi.” P'xan greeted. “I'm P'xan. This is Kovashoth.”
Said brown snorted, and lowered his head to regard Lestondric with one whirling eye. And then he snorted.
“He says he'll let you.” P'xan told him. “He's gotten _so_ big, so. Thanks.”
“Ohhh… Oh, no, he doesn't like me, does he?” Lestondric tried not to let any horrible sadness show, but it was always such a blow to the confidence when a dragon did not like him. “I'm sorry. I'll be quiet and good. I promise.”
“No, he likes you.” P'xan hastened to offer. “Or at least, he doesn't dislike you? Kovashoth?”
The brown snorted. }: ... Fine. I will be nice. I don't want to waste time when we should be Studying.:{
He dipped one shoulder toward Lestondric.
P'xan nodded. “He says scrub well.”
“Oh, I will! Watch, I'll show you!” And Lestondric did. It was clear fairly quickly that he was not exaggerating when he said that he had experience with washing large dragons. And he put his whole backside into it, too. He did not skimp or sandbag even for one second.
Kovashoth rumbled approval.
P'xan nodded, once. “Yes. Like that.” He confirmed. “Leave his wings and face be, though. I'll handle those.”
“Yes, sir!” As Lestondric worked, he hummed a little working song. All in all, he had a decent ear for pitch.
Kovashoth rumbled again, and then started to hum along. His tail flicked, once and then twice.
“... You don't have to call me sir.” P'xan stated. “I'm only fourteen Turns.”
“But you're a dragonrider, though!” Lestondric insisted. “You have a beautiful voice, Kovashoth!”
“... A Weyrling still, maybe.” P'xan demurred. “... Kovashoth's just… big.”
The brown snorted. }:I am bigger than I was but so are you.:{
P'xan winced. “He says thank you. For the compliment.”
“You're very welcome!”
But Lestondric glanced sideways at P’xan.
“Are you all right? I didn't say something wrong, did I?”
“No, no.” P'xan hastened to assure. “You've been polite, so far! And Kovashoth is getting bigger all the time, so help is always appreciated.”
“I’ve helped with loads of big dragons!” Lestondric beamed. He would never get tired of saying so.
“Oh yeah?” P'xan responded.
“Mostly with Jagobroth, but I've helped with lots of golds and other bronzes, too.”
P'xan nodded again. “Well, Kovashoth isn't as big as a _gold_.” He temporized. “Or some bronzes. But he's still a respectable size. So. Thanks.”
“Thank you for letting me meet your dragon!” Lestondric patted the brown’s hide.
Kovashoth snorted, eyes whirling lightly blue and green. }:Tell him to scrub well.:{ the brown stated.
P'xan nodded, eyed Lestondric. “Kovashoth says to keep scrubbing well.” He passed on.
“Oh, I will!” And true to his word, Lestondric scrubbed dutifully and fastidiously until every inch of the dragon he was responsible for was sparkling clean.
Kovashoth allowed it, eyes whirling blue green contentedly.
P’xan nodded once more, after a bit. “All right, he’s done.” he said finally. “Kovashoth?”
}:I shall go for a swim,:{ the brown told his rider and waded deeper.
“Does that mean he thought I did all right?” Lestondric looked hopefully to P’xan.
“He does.” P’xan confirmed. “... Thank you. Sorry… what was your name again?”
“I’m Lestondric, sir! Son of S’kand,” said the boy with pride.
“I don’t know S’kand personally.” P’xan responded. “But he’s a Wingleader.” A pause. “Are you going to Stand?”
“Of course! And I’m going to Impress before Kariskan, too,” the boy bragged. Kariskan was too boy crazy to actually focus on Impressing a dragon.
“You helped wash my Kovashoth well.” P’xan said with approval. “He’s no Search dragon but he liked you. … How old are you?”
“I’m twelve, sir!” the boy said proudly.
“About ready to start Standing soon, then.” P'xan nodded. “Do you have a Craft in mind too? I was lucky. Kovashoth came my way my first Hatching after I was Searched.”
“I don’t need a craft,” said Lestondric. “I’m going to Impress on my first try, too!”
“You'll be stuck as a Weyrling for a while then.” P'xan pointed out, but he sounded amused. “... Do you have a particular colour you'd be hoping for?”
“I don’t care about color. And my dad was a weyrlingmaster for ages!” said Lestondric. “So I don’t mind helping them until I’m old enough to fight.”
“That's good. I mean, I'm still an assistant. I'll be one for a long time too.” P'xan offered, then nodded approval. “Keeping an open mind is important, too. I thought for sure I'd get a blue or green, but Kovashoth picked me.”
“And my dragon will pick me, too!”
