A Place to Be Useful

Writers: Bree, Eimi
Date Posted: 29th October 2006

Characters: Jynrek, Iyoen
Description: Jynrek asks Iyoen if he'd be willing to put up with Abrei as an assistant gardener.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 13, day 25 of Turn 3

"Iyoen!" Jynrek lifted his hand in greeting as he approached the farmer.
"Do you have a few moments?" "Sure, Jynrek," the Master craftsman grinned as he brushed the dry soil from his hands. "What can I do for you? Did you see my new wintergreens? They're looking promising."

"I haven't had a chance to look yet," Jynrek replied. "I'm afraid it's been a bit chaotic in the infirmary... has anyone told you, yet?"

"That things are chaotic in the infirmary? Someone had to _tell_ me that?" he asked with an amused grin. "Or are you referring to your new promotion?"

Jynrek rolled his eyes. "I wasn't actually hoping for a promotion, and I'm certainly hoping to be demoted again eventually. The problem is that Abrei is... not in a place where she can do her job. And I don't know when she will be."

"Well, that is too bad," Iyoen nodded. "But I guess these things happen. What is she going to do?"

Raising his eyebrows, Jynrek gave Ioyen a meaningful look. "We were thinking maybe she should direct her formidable talents towards studying a new field. One that involves less stress than dealing directly with patients..." Iyoen might not like where this was going, but Jynrek was hoping he'd at least _consider_ it.

"You want her to come down here and help out in the greenhouses?" The master farmer asked, connecting the dots.

"Not right away. But eventually..." Jynrek shrugged. "She's smart and a quick learner, and she needs _something_ to study that will make her useful without putting her under too much pressure."

"Sure," Iyoen shrugged. "I'd love to work with her."

That made Jynrek slightly suspicious. "You _have_ met her before, haven't you?" "A couple times I suppose, in passing. I mostly know her by reputation." The farmer felt a gentle nudge at the back of his knees and reached back to scratch his aging canine, Sprout's head.

If Abrei's reputation didn't worry him, Jynrek had no intention of raising the issue. "I'm not sure when she'll be ready to start working again, but someone will let you know once it looks like that time is approaching."

"Sounds good," Iyoen nodded. "Should I prepare any material for her to study in the meantime? Or is it too soon for that?"

Jynrek hesitated, and then nodded. "That would be perfect." He didn't know how long Abrei would be able to relax without having _something_ to study, so it might be good to head off that complaint with materials for her new tasks.

"Where can I find her to deliver it to?"

"Perhaps you should just bring them to the infirmary." Jynrek smiled.
"She'll have to come in from time to time for checkups, so we can get them to her, then."

"I don't mind delivering them personally and explaining a few things,"
Iyoen offered. "How about we send here out here to speak to you, then?" Jynrek was just hoping Abrei didn't say something so terrible that Iyoen changed his mind about working with her. "You're fairly easy to find... she can stop by and pick up whatever you have for her in a sevenday or two."

"That would be fine too. I'd like a chance to explain a few things in depth." Some things were just better explained in person rather than on paper.

"Excellent." Jynrek held out a hand, smiling. "Thank you so much, Iyoen.
It's good to know she'll have a place to be useful without harming her health."

"Always glad to be of service to the Healers," the farmer smiled as he took the offered hand. A master healers help might be nice. He just hoped she liked canines...
