If It Happens

Writers: AL, Kaysea
Date Posted: 22nd November 2008

Characters: J'gen, Irlani
Description: J'gen and Irlani talk after the meal with the girls.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 13, day 1 of Turn 4

The meal had gone well - or so he thought. The girls had been polite and as
far as Talliea was concerned, even friendly towards Irlani. Gyta had
appeared at the table halfway through the meal, and despite Calliea's name
calling earlier, she had even welcomed the child. They had farewelled the
pair a short time ago, and he now relaxed in the living area of their
quarters while Irlani put the child to bed. He could get used to this
life - with her - the three of them - quite easily.

>From the alcove he could hear the soft voice of her singing, the lullabye
gentle and sweet. A moment later it stopped, and a few moments more brought
Irlani back into the main part of the weyr. She smiled to J'gen as she
eased herself into a chair. "Well, that didn't go as badly as I feared it
would."

"She fell asleep quite quickly then?" he asked with a grin, knowing it
wasn't Gyta she was alluding to.

Irlani clicked her tongue. "Gyta was half asleep before I started rocking
her." Some might think that Gyta was too old, but Irlani enjoyed rocking
her children, no matter how old. Though, they did tend to want to stop
after a while. She'd rock Gyta as long as the child would let her. "And
you know very well what I mean."

"Yes, I do." he smiled, and patted the settle beside him. "Come and sit
down with me."

The foster mother stood and crossed over to the settle, easing down beside
him. One hand rested upon his thigh while she leaned over to lean her head
upon his shoulder, enjoying his closeness. "Do you think she'll ever get
used to me?"

"In time, possibly. Unfortunately she has her mothers nature, so it could
take a long, long time." he shook his head, "But Talliea seems quite taken
with you, she may have a more calming in fluence on her sister. And I'll
have to get in touch with Rigen, you haven't met him yet." J'gen smiled
encouragingly. "He's completely different - different mother too."

"Is he from a flight?" Irlani asked softly.

"No," he smiled indulgently, "Vardraya and I were weyrmated for almost a
full term before she fell pregnant with Vordrigen. She was my first love."
For a moment he could see her face in his mind, smiling as calm, she had
barely glanced at her son before she passed away. "She spent barely a half
candlemark with him before she died." his memory of that time was
bittersweet, and he felt his eye moisten in remembrance.

"I'm sorry, J'gen. I didn't know." If she had, she wouldn't have asked.
Irlani turned her face to place a kiss upon his shoulder.

"Hey, its alright." he turned and kissed her full on the lips, "Most of my
memories of 'Raya are good ones. You haven't brought up memories I hate to
relive. She got to see 'Rigen, that was the main thing."

"Do you...want more children?" Irlani hadn't told him of her inability to
bear children of her own - would he see that as a strike against her? Most
likely not, but it saddened her to think that she wouldn't necessarily be
able to provide him with something he would want.

"If it happens, it happens." he shrugged. "I would love any child I was
lucky enough to father, but if I don't have any more - that's fine too.
Why? Would you like a child?" he asked. "If you would like one, we can give
it a try?" he said with a crooked smile and a lewd wink.

"I'm afraid it won't work." Irlani sat up and shook her head. "Attempts in
the past have been unsuccessful. I was...just wondering."

"Oh, Irlani. I'm sorry - I was trying to be funny and it didn't work. I
didn't realise..." his arm slipped around her pulling her closer again. "As
long as I have you - and you're happy to be with me that's all that
matters - to me."

"Well, you should know." Irlani pointed out, a soft smile playing over her
lips. "Of course...that doesn't mean we couldn't _try_."

"I enjoy _trying_ with you." he smiled softly bestowing a kiss on her lips.
"Shall we?"

"Oh yes." Irlani's hand slid around to the back of his neck and she drew
herself as closed as possible, body pressed against his own. "Let's."

"Hmmmm..." he didn't need any other encouragement, as he swung her up in
his arms and stood from the settle. "You don't have to tell me twice." he
said with a wink and carried her off to the bed chamber.
