Tavia

Tavia

U'kaiah lay stretched out on the bed next to his tiny son. Little
Kaiavin was not fussing at all, but was looking around at this brand
new world he had been born into. Or rather, _trying_ too look around.
His eyes still could not focus on anything and he made faces that amused
his proud Da to no end. "You know, my Ma told me that if you keep
crossing your eyes like that, they'll stay that way forever. Be warned,
little man."

Tavia watched from the entrance with an amused smile. He'd offered to
watch the little guy and give her the time to go to the bathing room
and clean up. She'd relished the opportunity and had come back feeling
human again. Now she was peeking in to the room to see the bronzerider
admiring his son. "Teaching him already?"

"I am!" he grinned from ear to ear. "I taught him a trick already!
Watching this. If I touch his face here, he'll turn his head that way.
Watch!" He tickled the little baby cheek and was rewarded by Kaiavin
turning his head towards it. "And the other side, too." U'kaiah
caressed the other side and felt gratified when, again, the baby's head
turned. "Isn't that amazing?"

She didn't have the heart to steal his joy so she just smiled back at
him and came over to watch. "It really is," she nodded. She perched on
the edge of the bed. "He really is a good baby." She couldn't believe
how lucky they were as she watched his little arms wave in the air.

"Aw, he's _perfect_!" U'kaiah reached for her hand, smiling up at her
warmly. "We did really good, didn't we."

She put her hand in his and pressed his fingers. "We sure did. Did you
see his tiny little toes?"

"I did. Nails and everything." He didn't know why, but that was what
stuck him as most amazing. How could something that tiny be real!
U'kaiah moved over enough to give her a bit of space to wiggle in
between him and their tiny son, giving it an inviting pat.

She slid into the space he made and marveled again at the mass of dark
curls. "His hair is so much like yours. You don't see babies with this
much hair very often. Usually they're rather close to bald."

"Those would be my genes, I'd say," he said rather smugly, curling an
arm gently around her middle. "I can't believe even I was once this
small."

"Yes you were... once." She smiled and patted his thigh where he
curved behind her. "He's going to be a heartbreaker. His eyes are
light but with dark hair like that if he has my green eyes..." she let
her voice trail off and shook her head. If he was as handsome as his
da the ladies wouldn't be able to resist.

The thought made his chest swell with pride just a little. His son, the
heart-breaker. To go with Kaiafel, the charmer. And Ravyan, he had a
feeling, would be the smart one with big inquisitive eyes taking in the
world. How did he get to be so lucky? "I'm really happy right now,
Tavia. I truly am. Thank you for all of this." She was a large part
of that warm glow he felt deep down inside.

Life was difficult to figure out sometimes but this right here was a
moment to treasure. A feeling of joy blossomed inside of her at just
the simple pleasure of his words. "Thank _you_," she replied softly.
She leaned her head a little forward to take a deep breath of
Kaiavin's hair. Then she turned her head to look at U'kaiah. "I'm very
happy too. I want to remember this for always."

He smiled softly, caressing her cheek with the back of his fingers. How
lucky they were to have each other to share this all with. Wouldn't it
be grand if this were just the beginning of many more moments like this.
If only he could share all this with Aileyan, too, he thought with a
twinge of sadness. But it brought a question to mind. "What does your
family think of all this?"

She smiled softly. "They were happy for me when they saw how happy I
was about the whole thing. I expect we'll see them soon." She
chuckled, "And I expect Kaiavin will be badly spoiled by his
grandparents."

"As he should be." There wasn't a better baby on Pern to lavish such
attention on, after all. "And me? What will they think of me?" He had
met Aileyan's father, but had yet to be introduced to Tavia's. He
wondered how they would take the man who 'knocked up' their daughter.
His reputation wasn't exactly a steller one, after all...

"They'll like you even if its only because you take such good care of
me." She smiled. There was no doubt that the bronzrider had gone far
beyond normal to be here for her and she really appreciated the effort
he'd made.

"Well, you just make it so sharding easy," he said teasingly, though
truly he meant it. U'kaiah rather liked taking care of Tavia, and being
taken care of in turn. "And you know, I have to meet the man who taught
you how to cook. He did me a favor that day for sure."

"I'll invite them to come meet their new grandson on their next rest
day. I'm sure they'll enjoy meeting him _and_ his father." She smiled
again happy to finally have her baby in her arms. In this moment all
was right with the world and she wanted to savor it to the fullest.
