Miryene glanced at Jio as they waited on her couch for Fielton and Daigoro to finish speaking to the harper. She reached out and took his hand, squeezing it lightly. "Are you sure you want to do this, Jio? I can't help but think you're getting a poor bargain..." It was hardly a romantic setting for a wedding... the healer was in the corner keeping an eye on her and had insisted she remain seated the entire time. Only the Hallmaster, the Hallsecond and Cinale had been informed of what was about to happen, and they'd gathered in Miryene's makeshift quarters for a quick ceremony.
"There is very little else that I _am_ sure of, Miryene," he said with a gentle squeeze back. Still, he could feel his heart pounding in his chest.
Miryene reached out her other hand to Cinale, smiling nervously at her friend. "Thank you for coming."
The cook took it and squeezed it gently. "Nothing could keep me from you both today, hon." She gave her a reassuring smile before glancing at Jio.
She still wasn't sure what she thought of this, but she knew her support was needed here. And she would give it.
Fielton finished his discussion on the other side of the room and came to face the three people sitting on the couch, looking perfectly pleased with the world. He might have hoped that Miryene would marry Ivenn, but in the end all he really wanted was to have things neat and orderly. "Are we ready over here?"
His Hallsecond didn't share the Hallmaster's enthusiasm as he took his place next to Cinale. He looked from Miryene to Jio with skeptisism. He did his best not to glare at the journeyman. The muscles in his back tensed as he remember just how Jio had slid into Miryene's effections, right under her husband's nose. It didn't matter if she realized it or not. Jio was not to be trusted.
The journeyman was oblivious to Daigoro's displeasure and as he looked at his soon to be bride. "Are you ready, Miryene?"
Miryene nodded, not wanting to admit to herself that she had grave doubts about what she was about to do. Taking advantage of Jio seemed like a terrible thing to do, but she would _not_ marry Ivenn again. And it couldn't be as bad as Jhonnel had been...
Jio gave her hand a reassuring squeeze before turning his eyes to the harper. Shards, was this _really_ happening?
Gently Cinale brushed her hand against Daigoro's arm as he came to stand beside her. She glanced up at him, silently asking him to reign in those emotions that made him frown...that made his eyes grow hard. **It's not going to help right now, hon...**
At her touch the Hallsecond looked down at Cinale and the pleading look in her eye as it briefly caught his. He knew what she wanted, and he knew she was right. For her sake, as he looked down on the fair-haired cook, Daigoro's eyes softened and his lips curved, if not into a smile, at least into a slightly more pleasant smirk.
There was little in the way of ceremony, as Cinale and Daigoro were only present as witnesses, and Fielton was only there to gloat about how neatly he'd tied up his latest scandal. The harper wasted little time in pronouncing Miryene and Jio to be husband and wife, and wishing them both luck and happiness.
Jio beamed as he squeezed Miryene's hands gently. He wanted to lift her up into his arms and celebrate the moment, but between her pregnancy and the presence of the Hallmaster, he settled for giving her a gentle peck on the cheek. More would come later. His heart raced at the thought of what would could with time.
Miryene returned his gentle kiss, but the very action reminded her that soon she would be alone with her new husband... and even with her current condition, there would be some intimacies that she hadn't really considered beforehand. She would share quarters with Jio now... be alone with him in the evenings and wake up with him in the mornings. Fond of him as she was, it still brought a certain nervousness.
A soft smile lit Cinale's eyes as she looked from Miryene to Jio. Shells, she hoped. How she hoped... Then she glanced up at the man beside her.
Daigoro looked down into her eyes and gave her his best 'See-I'm-Trying-To-Be-Happy' smile. But as she held his brown eyes with her blue, the tentative smile melted into a much more genuine, much more meaningful smile.
Fielton was oblivious to the undercurrents between the two pairs, walking the harper to the door before turning to glance over his shoulder. "Come on, Daigoro, Cinale... let's let the healer check on Miryene and give the new couple a little privacy. Cinale, you should have someone send dinner over for them so they can eat here."
"Of course, Hallmaster." She touched Daigoro briefly on the arm before leaving his side to hug Miryene, then murmur a kind word to Jio. Then she slipped out of the room.
Daigoro clearned his throat. "And I want to say that I wish you both all the happiness on Pern." He looked at Miryene and gave her a smile to assure her that he really did mean it. With a final nod to Jio, he followed Fielton and Cinale out the door.
