Physical Description of Persona:
R'yal has dark blond hair cut close below his ears, just high enough that it's hidden by riding headgear, and blue eyes. He takes great care of his appearance and contrives somehow to make a simple shirt and trousers look smart. Although he's caught one or two Thread scores on his back, to his great relief his face has remained unscathed.

Emotional Description of Persona:
The polar opposite of his conscientious older siblings, R'yal enjoys luxuries such as his fine clothes, and prefers to avoid hard work when he can. As a young boy he was used to being able to wheedle people into letting him have his own way. Weyrlinghood knocked most of this laziness out of him but he's still not lost the habit of trying to charm his way out of a job he dislikes. Despite the drills and the shock of finding himself having to fight Fall, he's happy enough with life as a dragonrider, and having Iliraith as a companion has reawakened a stifled sense of duty that might otherwise have disappeared from his character altogether.

History of Persona:
Ryal, his older brother Cadenry and his older sister Rynell were born in a sea hold near the southern coast of the Northern Continent, the children of the younger brother of the Holder and his wife. Ryal's mother died when he was three and he and his sister were cared for by a foster mother, who indulged him rather more than she should have being the youngest. As he got older he clashed more and more often with his father, who was not known for suffering fools and time-wasters.

After a miserable Turn as a seacraft apprentice the Holder suggested to his brother that Ryal would have to be employed somewhere else. By Ryal's fourteenth birthingday his father had grown sick of his reluctance to find an honest trade and began to search around for journeymen or masters willing to take him on. One was eventually found - a mason on his way to an assignment in the South.

Poor Ryal found himself faced with work which mostly consisted of hauling rock around and clearing up after the master. After two months he was desperate enough to try to run away, but fortunately his luck changed and he was Searched for Dolphin Cove Weyr. He Impressed green Iliraith at his third Hatching, a few days before his fifteenth birthingday.

Iliraith is medium-sized, with a hide coloured a light apple-green all over. She is often bewildered by her rider's carefree attitude towards life and is only confused all the more by his attempts at explanations, but is devoted to him all the same.
