Location: Dolphin Cove Weyr
Date: month 12, day 3 of Turn 3
Marithi was nervous, M'tias had sent word that he couldn't meet a fellow brownrider, he'd asked her to insetad. "B'ram?" she hoped he wouldn't be upset with her for coming instead of M'tias.
"Yes, ma'am," the brownrider nodded. "And you are Marithi?" he asked gently. This was not quite a happy task, giving a son and wife the last effects of a man they probably once loved.
"Yes, I am. My son. M'tias had drills with the Weyrlings. He said you had something to give us?" Marithi asked.
"Yes, ma'am, I do. I have come from Emerald Falls with your late husband's personal effects." He held the box out for her to take. "I am very sorry for your loss."
**Late husband?** Marithi was stunned, M'tias had said nothing.
Silently she reached for the box, wondering what on Pern could be in it that she could want.
"And here is the letter stamped with the Steward of Emerald Fall's seal cataloging the contents. If you could check and be sure nothing is missing, I would appreciate it."
The woman opened the box with shaking hands. Her eyes widened at the sight of the frist item. The gold marriage mark exchanged before the harper almost sixteen turns eralier. The shaking in her hands worsed and she droped the box, scattering the rest of the contents.
The brownrider was surprised as the box slipped from her hands and had tried to catch it for her, but he could only watch helplessly as pieces of the dead man's life rolled or fluttered around the room. He bent down to right the box, looking up at her in concern. "Are you all right, ma'am?"
"Why?" she asked, making a helpless jesture toward the mark. "Why? The marriage was disolved."
"I'm sorry?" B'ram asked, completely confused as to what the woman was on about. Perhaps her grief was still fresh? Should he have just waited for M'tais? Had he done something wrong?
Marithi stared at the brownrider, those where words she had _never_
heard from a man. Nor had she expected to hear them. "I need to go."
she said hurriedly.
"I'll just gather this up for you," he said as he quickly began picking up the fallen items and placed them carefully back in the box. "I can have them up in just a moment."
"Mabye you should give them to M'tias, he'll know what to do with them." she stammered, backing away.
"Yes, of course," he said as he scuttled around the room picking up marks, hides, scraps of paper, little trinkets.
Marithi, half blinded by tears she'd not expected to cry, ran toward her room, not looking back.
